CLIMAte change in the florida keys

How has climate change impacted this area?

The Florida Keys are under attack from climate change and are suffering from various alterations in their environment. The primary issues are ocean acidification, rising temperatures, and rising sea levels. The ocean acidification from increased CO2 in the atmosphere has damaged the shellfish population and reduced the food supply for organisms dependent on them such as humans, fish, and birds. According to NOAA, "due to the increased acidity of seawater, many of the animals and plants in the ocean that have calcium carbonate skeletons or shells, such as corals, may experience reduced growth or ability to generate hard shells." Rising temperatures in the ocean has resulted in "coral to drive out algae" according to the WWF. When temps rise, corals eject their symbiotic zooxanthellae algae. This results in coral bleaching and a collpase of the ecosystem because many fish, plants, and other organisms rely on the coral for food and protection. This decemates the fishing and tourism industry as reefs are bleached and die. Rising sea levels from glacial melting results in a change in nutrient flow which can take out reefs. Sea level increases also submerge valuable real estate and turtle nesting grounds. Terrestrail animals are faced with a shrinking habitat while marine organisms are experiencing dangerous changes too. Rising sea levels also lead to greater flooding.

What is being done to combat this issue?

Rising sea levels, temps, and acidity can all be combated through reduced CO2 emission. Residents are combating climate change by carpooling, using EVs, turning unused appliances off, and buying solar. According to Coastal Resilience, scientists are also implementing "grey infrastructure" such as seawalls to reduce flooding. Building up with "stilts" is also effective in mitigating the harmful effects of flooding on property. The region is making efforts to maintain/expand the coastal mangrooves because they provide flood protection.

Where is a similar form of climate change experiencedi. How does this affect the region around it?ii. What effects does it have globally?

A similar form of climate change can be found in Australia in the Great Barrier Reef region. Rising temps and ocean acidification is bleaching the coral and reducing the food supply for many organisms. Loss of coral is damaging the marine industry and tourism. Rising sea levels and coral desimation is compounding and resulting in immense flooding. Globally, this is reducing the biodiversity and strength of marine ecosystems. As the Great Barrier Reef declines, dependent food webs and migration patterns will be largley affected which will reduce the food supply of humans and limit tourism.
