Camera Movements

Camera movements make a film/video more interesting by showing the scene in different ways. It can also effect the way transitions between scenes happen and the mood or emphasis of that scene.

Camera movements are very similar to the photography composition: perspective just just in motion.

Static Shot

Static shots are where you film a scene without moving the camera. All the movements happen without moving the camera.

Its best to shoot these scenes with a stable tripod so the camera doesn't move!!

Pan Shot

Tilt shots are where you move the camera along the Horizontal axis. This can be going from the left to the right or right to left. This is a common transition between scenes or to reviel something. It can also be following a focal point.

While the subjects can be moving do not mistake with with truck shot.

Tilt Shot

Tilt shots are where you move the camera along the vertical axis. This can be going up from the subject or going down. This is not a good option when the subject is doing something interesting!

These shots work best as transitions or to bring attention to something that is changing. They also mimic the point of view of a character example: the character has stepped on something and it looking down to investigate what it is.

Dolly Shot

Moving the camera towards or away from the subject without the use of the cameras zoom feature. This effects the proportion of items around the subject and mimics a oerson walking closer to someone else.

This makes the viewer feel as if they themselves are getting closer to whatever is being shown in the scene. It gives a more dramatic feel to the scene.

Zoom Shot

In this shot the camera does not move you use the zoom feature on the camera to get closer to the focal point of the scene.

This keeps the proportions of the items in the frame the same just gets closer to them.

Truck Shot

This is the type of shot where the camera is following a moving object keeping usually the same distance between the two. In this shot it is moving on the horizontal axis not up and down.

This is common when following a moving vehicle or running person.

Tracking

This is moving the camera around the scene for a extended amount of time. Unlike Dolly or Truck this movement can go in any direction often following a focal point in the frame.

This is the type of movement you see with flying objects or projectiles. Such as following a baseball or a bird.

Arial Shot

This is where the camera is above the focal point looking down. While the camera can move it is common to be static.

This is the type of movement you see with flying objects or projectiles. Such as following a baseball or a bird.

Pedistal Shot

This is where the camera is moveing up or down while it is facing forward. This is used to capture large vertical items such as buildings, trees, and statues.

This movement is easiest to achieve with a drone camera.

There are many more camera movements however these are the most popular and most common.

As you are filming your own videos you will use a range of camera movements some of which where not talked about in this presentation.
