What Is Self Sufficiency?
To be self sufficient we would have to require no assistance from outside our city to provide for ourselves and citizens. We would have to be fully independent (including in reference to trade) from the rest of the world and possible ecosystems meaning a stress on recylability and renewability.

What Is Sustainability?
Sustainabilty means to be able to be maintained for a long time without damage to other life forms and preserving our world for the future genrations. The UN provides goals to help us address 'all elements of sustainability' as asked of us in the brief. We focused on:

Our Location
In order to select our loation, we first identified the fundamentals of life: water, air, energy, waste and food. Our location would have to be good for all these five aspects, and so we selected Las Pampas, fields of fertile land in Argentina, given its great climate year as well as already being flat and near a river if we needed hydroelectric power.
Next Steps
Ideas
Introduction
- Desigining our city with geodesic domes to protect it from outside toxic fumes,
- Making our city walkable to reduce emissions and encourage exercise.
The Layout of Our City
In later rounds, we plan to have a clearer idea of where buildings are in the inside of the city, but for now we mostly looked into:
Next Steps
Ideas
Introduction
Improves general citizen happines, but also replaces carbon dioxide for oxygen.
Green Spaces
Algae photobioreactors can intake 400 times more carbon that trees and can be used for seats and lights also.
Liquid Trees
Inspired by the Eden Project (displayed to the right). Stops toxic air from entering and is good for insulation.
Geodesic Domes
Based on the prompt, we inferred that the future may be inhabitable due to toxic fumes and air pollution, so came up with some ways to tackle this.
Air
Next Steps
Ideas
Introduction
- Engineering collection systems so water which runs down roofs can be stored ensuring we have a closed-loop water system,
- Utilising new methods of agriculture (e.g aeroponics and monitoring systems) to limit water waste and usage,
- Filtering used and dirty water through photobioreactors and anaerobic treatment to be cleaned and reused.
Water is an incredibly vital part of the human life, so it's important that we conserve it and use it wisely.
Water
Next Steps
Ideas
Introduction
Solar powered cold storage, dehydrated food, GM seeds, alternative fridges e.g elastocaloric or ionocaloric fridges
Storage
Focus on a plant based diet and insects for protein and community farms with GM or selectively bred animals.
Meat
Fertilising: Amazonian Dark Earth, hair fertiliser, composting,Alternatives: hydroponics, aquaponics, aeroponics,Monitoring: Agriculture sniper robots, drones, advanced AI
Soil
Commercial crop farming: vertical aeroponics farming.Subsistence/Community crop gardens: aquaponic greenhouse.
Space and Land
Agriculure releases 25% of greenhouse emissions, sodo we feed a large population whilst maintaining sustainability?
Food and Agriculture
Next Steps
Ideas
Introduction
- Use supercritical water to burn waste without the flame and same environmental impact,
- Work towards a circular economy where all materials are recycled.
For other waste, we could:
- Implement the widespread use of compost bins throughout the city,
- Redistribute unsold food,
- Use the food waste as biofuel.
To tackle food waste, we could:
Food waste accounts for 8-10% of global greenhouse emissions, and that's without even considering packaging waste such as plastic. So how do we make this sustainable?
Waste
Next Steps
Ideas
Introduction
- The use of biofuels made through either food waste or anaerobic digestion (when cleaning water),
- Solar energy with aerospace precision,
- Kinetic energy harvesting tiles and stairs,
- Biomechanical energy through specially made clothes or shoes (for individuals to use).
Our initial idea was nuclear energy given how it is reasonably clean, however we discovered it was incompatible with a geodesic dome, but in future rounds we'd like to come back to this and try figure out how to make it less finite, but for now we looked at:
Energy
Next Steps
Ideas
Introduction
- To combine all our ideas together so they work harmoniously in our city,
- We will look at which ideas can be helpful for multiple aspects and create programs to help them work efficiently.
Goal 3 - Combine Ideas
- To design and create a more detailed plan for how our city looks,
- To work towards this we will take inspiration from other sustainable city projects like The Line and use 3d models.
Goal 2 - City Layout
- To look at how to improve citizen satisfaction,
- To ensure good mental and physical wellbeing,
- We will conduct surveys and research free healthcare systems to help us work towards this.
Goal 1 - Social Aspects

Any Questions?
Thank You
We will look at how we can use programmes to tackle multiple issues at once and develop our city.
Our Plan
We will look at how to create walkable cities so no polluting transport is needed.
Our Plan
We will look into free healthcare systems like the NHS and conduct surveys on what people need to maintain their mental health.
Our Plan
We must look at how to combine all our ideas in one city.
Challenge 3
We must begin to visualise the layout of our city and manage transport.
Challenge 2
We must also look at social catergories such as happiness, education and health.

Our Plans Moving forward
"POV: You travel to the future and see the world's resources have run out and our planet is no longer inhabitable. You need to use innovation and new technology to design a self-sufficient, fully sustainable city which will prevent that from happening. You will need to consider all elements of sustainability within your design to ensure your city will succeed."
