Jaden

Trauma-Informed Care

Jaden has been staying at friends’ houses over the past month after a fight with their partner Robin. They moved into Robin’s apartment nearly one year ago and Robin forced Jaden to leave whenever there was conflict between them. When they are not getting along Jaden typically stays with any friend they can find to take them in or sleeps in their car. When you encounter Jaden, they tell you they decided to leave after the most recent fight with Robin, “I knew I had to leave when Robin started putting their hands on me.” It is then that you notice injuries to Jaden’s hands and arms. Every follow up question you ask Jaden leads to a tangent in their story, making it difficult to place the details into a timeline.

It is not necessary to know every detail of Jaden’s story in order to direct them to the proper resources.

While you acknowledged that Jaden is having a hard time, you failed to acknowledge the seriousness of their situation by suggesting they wait until the conflict ends to return to their partner without knowing if that is the best outcome for them, or if that is what they want. You also did not offer any solutions or options to support them in recognizing their trauma. Ideally, you want to build confidence and trust with Jaden, and offer solutions to help them without re-exposing them to trauma or making assumptions. This response could lead Jaden to believe that what they are experiencing isn't serious or dangerous because you didn't treat it that way when engaging.

People who have experienced trauma such as physical abuse may have a difficult time telling a linear story with a clear beginning, middle, and end. A survivor of abuse can also be re-traumatized by having to revisit difficult memories related to the abuse. It is not necessary to know every detail of Jaden’s story in order to direct them to the proper resources. Although women are statistically more likely to be abused by male partners, anyone can be a victim of abuse at the hands of their partner. House of Ruth Maryland’s programs are available to Jaden and any other victim or survivor of abuse regardless of gender. House of Ruth Maryland has therapists available to help Jaden learn about trauma and to develop skills that will allow them to manage their symptoms as well as shelter which provides a safe place to live as they flee the violence in their relationship. Even if Jaden does not choose to access domestic violence resources immediately, it is important for them to know that they can access House of Ruth Maryland services if they need them in the future.
