How has climate change impacted this area?

Climate change, precipitation variability, and multiple droughts have negatively affected the economy of Ghana. As temperatures are on a record high, this is threatening the crop and livestock production and consumption in Ghana. Agriculture accounts for nearly 40% of Ghana's export earnings and provides 90% of the food for the country. Additionally, the increased temperatures caused by climate change will increase the levels of water related diseases like Cholera in tropical waters, which will be dangerous for the inhabitants of Ghana.

Where else in the world is experiencing a similar form of climate change? How does this affect the region around it? What effects does this have globally?

The village of Totope was once a small fishing community 3 miles from the sea, but due to worsening coastal and riverine erosion, the village is destroyed. Numour Puplampo is in his house that's half buried, causing him to have to leave his property.

The Sustainable Development Cluster of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) are supporting Ghana’s government in implementing risk reduction programs. With partners like NADMO, EPA, and GMet, the UNDP is aiming to establish adaptation and mitigation programs.

You may be wondering what's already been done that has already helped out Ghana: The AAP (Africa assistance plan) helped support Ghana improved frequency, volume, and quality of weather data by installing 8 automated weather stations. Flood and drought vulnerability maps have also been drawn out for communities using GPS and GIS

The whole region of sub-Saharan Africa is experiencing similar forms of climate change with increasing temperatures and increased drought leaving the population vulnerable. Kenya, Somalia, Djibouti, and Ethiopia are all examples of countries facing the worst heat and driest weather. This whole region is in danger of food and water shortages.

A report from the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification shows that the amount and duration of droughts has increased by almost 1/3rd in the last two decades. Right now over 2.3 billion people face water stress and climate change is only going to make this worse as time goes on.
