- Genocide began on the Wampanoag tribe, and Thanksgiving was the beginning of this
- The number of Wampanoag tribal members went from 100,000 to just under 3,000 in the 400 years since the first Thanksgiving
- Thanksgiving is what began Colonition in the US
- Wampanoag were pushed off their land
- Wampanoag were forced to convert to Christianity
- Later Wampanoag children were sent to Indian Boarding Schools
- The Wampanoag were not allowed to speak their own language
- This is a day of mourning
- People in the tribe meat at Plymouth Rock to mourn the genocide of their people that was advanced by the landing of the Mayflower
- This is a way to protest the inustives that continue to happen, such as the fight the Wampanoag has had to have to maintain their tribal status in the US.

- Families gather together
- Families celebrate the things they are greatful for
- Turkey, Stuffing, Pumpkin Pie, mashed potatoes, sweet potatos, and cranberries are eaten
- People go out the next day to shop

The Aftermath of the first Thanksgiving
- After being taught how to survive on the land, the Pilgrims thrived
- They stole land and called it their own
- They over used the land, causing less resources to be had by the Wampanoag
- The treaty kept them safe from toher tribes

- Like many Native American clans, drums were common instruments for the Wampanoag. One such drum was the Wampanoag water drum. This is a smaller hand drum with some water in it.
- Music was used for sacred reasons
- Dried gourds and instruments made ou of animal shells were also used

- The Pilgrims largely did not play instruments
- Much of their music revolved around religion
- Much of their music was singing

- The Pilgrims brough diseases to the Native Amercians
- The Wampanoag had been taken as slaves for years
- The Pilgrims came in force because they were anticipating an attack
- Had been attacked for years before teh Mayflower Landed, causing them to be apprehensive of the new arrival
- One the day of the first Thanksgiving, gunshots were heard, and the Wampanoag came in force to defend themselves
The reality they experienced:
- This was a peaceful encounter
- There was a feast to celebrate the success of the first encounter
- The Pilgrims helped the Native Americans
- The Pilgrims gathered supplies to prepare for the winter
- The Native Americans wanted to help them!
- The Pilgrims had silver uckels on their shoes
- The relationship between the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag is one of the best in history
- The pilgrims invited the Native Americans to share a meal with them
