They discussed Housing for All’s published report on their project of upscaling and development of Kulu’s indigenous lands.

Salma Shokri is the Special Rapporteur on Violence Against Women and Girls. She received a complaint of human rights violations from a civil society organization, Housing for All that is based in the country Zalaka’s capital, Kara. The complaint outlined ongoing human rights violations that do not comply with international human rights law standards for the promotion of adequate housing in the indigenous farming neighbourhood, Kulu. This violation is considered an object of an urgent appeal as the allegation is an ongoing human rights violation. Coincidently, Salma had a country visit scheduled for Zalaka as part of her mandate to familiarize themselves with the situation on the ground. According to Salma’s mandate, she has freedom of inquiry and can choose to facilitate dialogue between different actors, raise human rights awareness and contribute to policy and legislative reform. During her country visit, Salma did not visit the Kulu neighbourhood. She visited Housing For All headquarters in Kara and a few other NGOs that work on the promotion of adequate housing but did not schedule a conversation with the indigenous feminist group in Kulu.

From their talks, Salma formed a picture of the poor housing conditions that contribute to the vulnerability of women in Kulu that the government has not addressed in their annual development plan. She also met the minister of housing and discussed policy changes to ensure adequate standards of living. After her departure, she wrote a draft report praising the work done by Housing for All and called for opening a dialogue between the civil society organisation and the government to ensure the promotion of the right to housing and land and eliminate violence against women. She also called for the direct involvement of Kulu peoples in Housing for All projects.
