The Importance of Reading Stratergies
Reading strategically is the ability to analyze, comprehend, and interpret. Reading strategies are essential as they empower individuals to approach reading in a structured, purposeful, and engaging manner. They are tools that help readers navigate through diverse texts, comprehend complex information and discover the avenues of critical thinking skills crucial for learning.
Skimming involves quickly going through the text to get the main idea, while scanning involves looking for specific information. These techniques are useful for finding key points or relevant details without reading every word..
Scanning: Purpose: Scanning is used to find specific information, such as a particular word, phrase, number, or detail. It's a targeted search technique. Technique: Instead of reading the entire text, scan by moving your eyes systematically. Look for keywords, dates, names, or any specific information you are searching for. Use visual cues like bold text, headings, or bullet points to guide your search.
SKIMMING AND SCANNING
Skimming: Purpose: Skimming is used to get a general idea or overview of the text. It's helpful when you want to understand the main topics without focusing on every detail. Technique: When skimming, read headings, subheadings, introductory paragraphs, conclusion, and any bold or italicized text. Move your eyes over the text to grasp the main points. You might also read the first sentence of each paragraph or key sentences to capture the essence.
LEARNED:After completing the reading students list information they have acquired or the answers to the questions they had listed in the "Want to Know" section. It allows students to reflect on what they've learned and reinforces their understanding of the topic.
WANT TO KNOW: List questions you have or the things you are curious about regarding the topic. This section helps guide curiosity and directs focus during the learning process.
KNOW: Students list the things they already know about the topic being studied. This could include previous knowledge or information they have on the subject before beginning.

KWL sheets are versatile and can be used across various subjects and grade levels. They promote active engagement, critical thinking, and metacognition by encouraging students to think about what they know, what they want to know, and what they've learned.
Connecting:Connecting involves relating the information being learned to one's prior knowledge, personal experiences, or the world around them. It's about making associations between new concepts and what is already familiar. By establishing connections, learners can deepen their understanding and find relevance in the material. Vizualizing & Connecting
Visualizing:Visualizing involves creating mental images while reading or learning. It's a technique where readers actively imagine the scenesor concepts described in the text. When individuals visualize, they engage their imagination to form vivid mental pictures, helping them better understand and remember the content.
CORNELL NOTE-TAKING
Divide Paper into Sections: Divide your note paper into three sections: a narrow left-hand column (for cues), a wider right-hand column (for notes), and a summary section at the bottom. Take Notes: During the lecture or reading, jot down main ideas and details in the right-hand section. Use the left-hand column for cues or keywords related to the content. Summarize: After completing the notes, summarize the main points in the bottom section. This serves as a review tool for quick revision.
RAP STRATERGY
Read: Read a paragraph or section of the text. Ask: Ask yourself questions about what you've just read to ensure comprehension. Put: Put the main ideas or concepts in your own words, either by summarizing orally or in writing. Utilizing the RAP strategy during reading sessions helps readers actively engage with the text, stimulates critical thinking, and enhances comprehension by encouraging regular self-assessment of understanding and content recall.
The SQ3R technique encourages active engagement with the text, which can significantly improve comprehension and retention.

This method stands for Survey, Question, Read, Recite, and Review. Survey: Skim through the text to get an overview. Question: Formulate questions about what you expect to learn. Read: Go through the material carefully. Recite: Summarize what you've read in your own words. Review: Revisit the content to reinforce your understanding.
