Teaching Gifted Students

E.A.G.L.E. is the name given to the gifted and talented program that is provided by the Sikeston R-6 School District from 1st grade through 8th grade. As of 2022, we provide services for 2.1% of the ~3,200 student population.

IN other Words...

E.A.G.L.E. is an acronym, and it stands for: Ensuring the Academically Gifted a Learning Environment.

What is E.A.G.L.E?

Each state has their own definition of what makes a student gifted!

"students who exhibit precocious development of mental capacity and learning potential as determined by competent professional evaluation to the extent that continued educational growth and stimulation could best be served by an academic environment beyond that offered through a standard grade-level curriculum." --

Background on Gifted Education

Missouri does not require districts to provide gifted services.

Each state is left to make decisions about gifted education -- and most importantly, gifted education funding.

There is no federal mandate for gifted education.

This is the most common question that I am asked each year by teachers and parents. Let's explore!

"What do y'all do in EAGLE?"

• less time for content that does not fit into the social studies curriculum
• less time for essential social/emotional content tailored specifically to gifted needs
• more difficult to incorporate big, creative units without sacrificing social studies content.

For the middle and junior high level gifted program, our gifted program is technically a social studies course (think of it like an AP-style course, but without the rigorous testing!) This means that the work that EAGLE students do in class goes towards their overall grade, just like their math, science, and ELA classes. This comes with both pros and cons:

• students have motivation to complete assignments since they are tied to the social studies grade
• students do not miss out on social studies content when they are in EAGLE
• Social studies is a more flexible content area that allows for more cross-curriculur learning opportunities.

What does this look like in EAGLe?

What this means for Me is that I have a responsibility to balance these two sets of standards for my students throughout the year.

What this means for the Sikeston gifted program is that students are getting both a gifted and a social studies curriculum during their time in the EAGLE program!

Let's go through a sample lesson that meets our students' affective needs

• This is also commonly known as "social-emotional learning"
• Most schools provide social-emotional learning opportunities through character-building programs (like House Champions) as well as through guidance counselors and in-class lessons.
• Gifted students are often more advanced in their social-emotional development than their peers, and therefore need more advanced tools and resources.
