WELCOME TO ...Half Dome in Yosemite
Half Dome in Yosemite National Park is a well-known rock formation in the park and is named for its distinct shape. Half Dome is not a mountain but a granite formation that rises around 5,000 feet above the valley below. Half Dome is excellent for hiking. It is a 14 to 16-mile round trip hike to the top with a significant elevation gain. However, the view from the top is remarkable.

WELCOME TO ...Denali National Park
Denali National Park and Preserve encompasses six million acres of Alaska's interier wilderness. It's centerpiece is 20,310 ft high Denali, formerly known as Mount McKinley, North America's tallest peak. This park contains 12,000 lakes and 16% of the park is covered by glaciers. The park is home to wildlife including grizzly bears, wolves, moose, caribou, and Dall sheep. Popular activities in summer include biking, backpacking, hiking, and mountaineering.

WELCOME TO ...Shoshone Falls
The Shoshone Falls are located in southern Idaho near the city of Twin Falls. One side is a sheer face while the other three sides are smooth and round, making it appear like a dome cut in half. The falls have a 212 foot drop about the same as that of Niagara Falls. Early settlers called the falls, "the Niagara of the West." The amount of water that flows down the falls have been reduced because of irrigation projects that occur upstream.

Yellowstone National Park was established on March 1, 1872, as the world's first national park. It contains 63 miles north to south and 54 miles east to west and is mainly in the state of Wyoming. The park is famous for its geysers and hot springs. It contains about half of the world's geysers. Tourists may see grizzly bears, bison, and elk if they visit the park. More than 3 million tourists visit each year.

Zion National Park is located within the state of Utah in the southwestern United States. In 1909 the park was established and was expanded in 1919. Zion is usually viewed from the bottom looking up at the canyon walls. This park is a climber's paradise with 2,000-foot sandstone cliffs. It's world-renowned for its big wall climbs. Zion has one of the largest freestanding arches in the world.

On December 7, 1941, Japan attacked an American naval base called Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. The Japanese traveled over 3,000 miles for this surprise attack. This caused the United States no choice but to join World War II and strike back for the horror caused at Pearl Harbor. More than 2,000 American soldiers lost their lives, while over half of that amount sustained significant injuries.

The Golden Gate Bridge is one of the most photographed bridges in the world. The length of the bridge measures 8,981 feet and connects San Francisco and Marin County. Before the bridge was completed in 1937, people could only reach San Francisco by ferry. Around 110,000 vehicles cross the bridge each day. It took four years to build this bridge.

WELCOME TO ...Mt. Rainier
Mt. Rainier is the highest mountain in Washington. It is believed to be at least 50,000 years old. The mountain is 54 miles southeast of Seattle and can be seen from the city. Rainier is an active volcano but has not erupted for more than 100 years. The volcano is the highest mountain in the Cascade Range at 14,410 feet. If you visit Mt. Rainier National Park, you can enjoy the view of the mountain closer. The park is filled with wilderness and is great for sightseeing and hiking.

WELCOME TO ...the Space Needle
The Space Needle is an observation tower located in Seattle, Washington. The top of the Space needle reaches 605 feet tall, 138 feet wide, and weighs 9,550 short tons. It is built to withstand winds of up to 200 mph and earthquakes of up to 9.0 magnitude. The Space Needle features an observation deck at 520 feet above the ground, providing views of the downtown Seattle skyline, the Olympic and Cascade Mountains, Mount Rainier, Mount Baker, Elliott Bay, and various islands in Puget Sound. Visitors can reach the top of the Space Needle by elevators, which take 41 seconds. There are 848 steps from the bottom of the basement to the top of the observation deck.

Pike's Peak has an elevation of 14,115 feet. It is in Colorado and is part of the Rocky Mountains. Pikes Peak is one of Colorado's fourteeners, meaning it is over 14,000 feet in height. Colorado has 53 fourteeners!Visitors can reach the summit by car or railway. The railway is the highest railway in the country. The view from the summit is spectacular and visitors can see over 100 miles on a clear day.Pikes Peak was named after Zebulon Pike who explored the area in 1806. Pikes Peak receives an average of 9.5 feet of snowfall each year.

Every year, more than 1.6 million people visit Sequoia National Park. One of the more popular tours in the park is the Trail of 100 Giants. On this hiking trail, visitors can see the oldest and biggest trees. Many of these trees are 500 to 1,500 years old. The largest living sequoia tree is called General Sherman, which is about 2,100 years old and is 275 feet tall.

Glacier National Park is located in the northwest corner of Montana. This national park has over a million acres with more than 175 mountains, 762 lakes, 563 streams, over 200 waterfalls, and more than 25 glaciers!The world-famous Going-to-the-Sun-Road which travels 53 miles into the heart of Glacier National Park is one of the most visited sections of the park. The road crosses the Continental Divide which can accumulate up to 80 feet of snow in the winter.

The Oregon Trail was a major route that people took when migrating to the western part of the United States. The Oregon Trail began in Independence, Missouri but most of the journey was through the western region of the country.The trail stretched for around 2,000 miles and the main vehicle the pioneers used was the covered wagon. Most of the settlers used oxen to pull their wagons. It took about 5 months to make the journey and it was very dangerous.

Lake Tahoe is the second deepest lake in the United States with a depth of 1,645 feet. Lake Tahoe is 2/3 in California and 1/3 in the state of Nevada. The amount of water in Lake Tahoe is about 39 trillion gallons, which is enough to supply each person in the United States with 50 gallons of water per day for 5 years. It is home to a number of ski resorts, summer outdoor recreation and tourist attractions.
