We see Artificial Intelligence used on the daily taking differing forms. From search engines, to chat boxes, etc., every day we find ourselves using the technology. Though despite this, some find that the technology is unacceptable and should be put at a halt, whereas others find it great and encourage the growth. What crosses the line for Artificial Intelligence? Why do some find it to be awful whereas others do not? Why are some platforms that use AI acceptable while others find it to be detrimental to society or unethical? The examples provided in this presentation show a range of ways AI is used daily and a description of the general feedback with each to attempt to answer these questions, and understand what crosses these border for people.

Students and teachers often find themselves using search engines such as Mathway or Socratic to offer help on homework assignments or find answers to questions they are unsure of. These are commonly used platforms that use artificial intelligence to solve problems while also providing reasonings behind such. Though these platforms are so widespread and have been accessible since 2002, they have never been a focus in the debate against artificial intelligence, and have not been considered in discussion regarding the ethics of AI impacting education (Frimage, 2020). Why is the focus shifted more towards other applications when these are so widespread amongst students and have been for years? These applications are just as capable to allow someone to receive higher grades on assignments/tests as other applications that receive negative attention.

Siri is a form of artificial intelligence that was produced and given access to a great amount of people early on. With the technology being present in Apple phones since 2011, many did not think to question the form of technology (Sanchez, 2023). We see Siri take on tasks, search the web, and even have the ability to make jokes or give advice. Marketed as a companion on your device, Siri is accessible for everyday use and activities. Though people sometimes refer to Siri as a "robot" people do not feel the need to get rid of the technology or have fear that this form of AI is always at access within our phones, listening to what we say, and recognizing to activate itself when the phrase "Siri" is said outside of the application. Siri has not been in the debate within the ethicality of AI, even though it is widely accessible to everyone with an iPhone. Why is this the case? Other applications such as Snapchat AI have been put under fire recently although they share similar functions. What is the reasoning for people of all age groups to find this "not crossing a border" within the terms of AI?

Self Driving cars were introduced in the past decade and have grown more popular with time. Through the use of cameras, sensors, cameras, radars, and artificial intelligence, the vehicle can operate and make decisions while driving itself (Lutkevich, 2023). This concept has posed many to question the ethics of it, and what decisions the cars will make in differing situations. Though many were skeptical at first, 47% of consumers say they are interested in the technology (Authors of Erickson, n.d.). What prompted the change in mindset? How do people navigate the ethical dillemas that are associated with the technology regarding AI's decision making?

We see the use of Chat GPT as a commonly used form of artificial intelligence recently. Chat GPT has the ability to use the technology to create messages and write essays. This is one of the keystone platforms for AI, for it has very easy access for users. Chat GPT is often used to create essays for students and were many's first application leading to the understanding of what AI is capable. Since this application has been made so accessible, many find that the technology completely crosses a line and is unethical in society, specifically regarding its use in education. After the recent emergence of Chat GPT, teachers and professors focus on AI being used in the classrooms, and is largely mentioned in debates about what AI is capable of. I often find myself asking why now such technology is being recognized negatively when other AI applications such as Mathway and Socratic have been available for so long? Were the other platforms just not recognized or is Chat GPT crossing a line of some sort; what would that line be?

This video gives a rundown on the ethicalities of self-driving cars. Though some are skeptical, many find themselves interested in the technology, however do not mention the physical dilemmas regarding the harmful impacts the decision-making of the cars can hold. Why is this use of AI not mentioned nearly as often as applications such as Chat GPT, when the cars can cause physical harm through AI versus the potential changing of one's grade in a class? What is more important to people when considering the harmful impacts of AI's decision-making?

Though the ethical problems within education are still present, the technology can provide advice and insight when needed quickly. Would you consider this functional or creepy due to the lack of human input/compassion?

People like AI for its ability to enhance efficiency, provide personalized experiences, and innovate across various sectors, from healthcare to entertainment. It offers convenience and the potential for groundbreaking advancements. On the flip side, some dislike AI due to concerns about job displacement, privacy issues, biases in decision-making, and the ethical implications of autonomous systems. The fear of loss of control, potential misuse, and the impact on societal structures contribute to reservations about widespread AI adoption. The balance between the benefits and ethical considerations shapes diverse attitudes toward AI.

Asking Chat GPT why it is liked/disliked- Here's what it had to say:

Using the Applications

Attached is an example of using the application Mathway to solve a math problem. To put the technology to use, I found an example question from Alegbra 2 to solve the problem. All that was required of me to receive this answer was taking a photo of the image. This application is not a search engine that leads me to the right direction/pages to solve it, it solves the problem for me instantly. People in the education system have used such technologies for years, yet do not find this decision making application to be much of an issue, when the impacts can be just as strong as applications like Chat GPT.

Siri as a Listener...

Attached is a photo of my computer activating Siri after saying the phrase "Siri." After saying this, I can speak freely as Siri interprets my words and finds solutions to my questions/responses to my phrases. This feature makes me question if Siri/my computer or phone are constantly listening to what I am saying, as it waits for the phrase "Siri" to be said. People don't question the ethicalities of the application because it is so commonly used, and marketed to have the "human" element of a comapanion. Is the popularity of an application what determines the public opinion of what crosses an ethical border?
