Assessing greater depth
www.kapowprimary.com
When assessing children as working at greater depth in art and design, evidence of creativity, originality and a deeper understanding of artistic concepts and techniques should form part of the assessment over technical proficiency alone.Kapow Primary has considered what greater depth may look like using a series of key elements that consider how children might develop artistically. Thinking about these areas, alongside more obvious proficiency in making skills, provides support for constructive feedback; helping children continue to grow and explore their creative potential.
Drawing
Conceptual understanding and application
Back
Experimentation, risk-taking and problem-solving
Reflection and evaluation
Personal voice and vision
Connections to the wider world
The children demonstrate an understanding of complex art concepts and apply them in their work. This could include their use of perspective, balance, composition and colour theory. For instance, look for children who use colour to evoke emotion or experiment with the illusion of depth in their drawings or artwork.
The children are often willing to take risks and experiment with different mediums, techniques and styles. They may not be afraid to make mistakes, try other techniques or combine styles uniquely.
The children critically evaluate and reflect on their work and that of others. They can make thoughtful decisions about their work and express why they made certain artistic choices. They also understand and can articulate how they could improve or approach their work differently next time.
The children’s work demonstrates a unique, personal voice that could be through a recurring theme or subject, a distinctive style or a way of interpreting and representing the world around them that is uniquely their own.
The children consider connections between their artwork and the wider world, which might involve drawing inspiration from nature, culture, history or personal experiences. They may also connect art and other disciplines, such as literature, science or PSHE.

While Knowledge of artists and art history provide valuable context, they represent a type of theoretical or contextual understanding that does not lend itself to this practical assessment. Cognition is difficult to annotate or evaluate in the same tangible way that a child's skill in brushwork, colour mixing or ability to generate original ideas can be.Evaluating and analysing require critical thinking and understanding that are important to develop in children but tricky to annotate in their artwork. This strand also refers to the disciplinary knowledge that children intrinsically acquire through the process of making art, which is not necessarily evident in the outcomes they produce.
