What is Comprehension? My own definition is that Comprehension is the process of understanding the text though literary devices and structures in context and meaning.

The great thing about teaching is that there is always room for improvement. Even though students understood the gist of writing an objective summary, intense practice, explicit and direct instruction is required for students to own the skill of building complex sentences with correct syntax. Moats states, "interpretation of sentences is required if students are to comprehend whole text (Scott, 2009)" (p. 105).

Importance of Sentence structure

The meaning of the sentence determines the structure of the sentence which determines its morphological form

Practice Syntax

The vegetable ate I. Ate I the vegetable. The vegetable I ate. I ate the vegetable.

Syntax resolve the meaning of words with multiple uses and multiple meanings

The water was purified through the filter Mountain water is water in its purest form. Some people choose to maintain their purity.

My bag of coffee from South America was lost in customs. It is customary to hold the door open for ladies. It is expensive to customize a Sebring convertible.

Conclusion

Reading Comprehension is a product of language comprehension and Word Recognition. Mental Model is activated as the teacher prompts questions to process working memory and long-term memory Explict and direct instruction of syntax and complex sentence building, will refine skills interpreting author's writing style within text. In addition, will build background knowledge for future texts and enhance writing skills.
