history: The origin of Durham as a religious center dates back to the ancient diocese of Lindisfarne, established by Saint Aidan of Lindisfarne at the request of Saint Oswald of Northumbria around the year 635. The see remained in Durham until the year 664, when it was moved to York , although it was later reinstated in 678 by the Archbishop of Canterbury. The community of Lindisfarne was home to several future saints, such as St Cuthbert of Lindisfarne, Bishop of Lindisfarne from 685 until his death on the Farne Islands in 687, and who is instrumental in the later development of Durham Cathedral.10

The cathedral houses the shrine and various treasures relating to Cuthbert of Lindisfarne, a 7th-century saint, which were brought to Durham by Lindisfarne monks in the 9th century. The head of Saint Oswald of Northumbria and the remains of Bede the Venerable also rest there. In addition, his library contains one of the most complete sets of ancient printed books in England, the pre-Dissolution monastic accounts, and three copies of the Magna Carta.
