The three farmers Boggis, Bunce, and Bean are attempting to catch and kill Mr. Fox, therefore this is the exterior battle. Being a cunning and clever individual, Mr. Fox attempts to outsmart the farmers and steal food from their fields.

Internally, Mr. Fox is trying to balance his need for adventure and his obligations as a husband and parent. He feels inferior due to the fact that he is dissatisfied with life and that he has not accomplished enough.
