Digital citizenship

Anyone who uses computers, the Internet, or other digital devices to interact with society on any level is considered to be practicing digital citizenship, which is the responsible use of technology.

Digital citizenship is used daily in education. With most students having one-to-one technology, they are constantly on technology. It teaches students what is safe, and how to protect their information as they utilize technology.

Uses and places in Education

SLMS has many technology resources within the library. It is imperative for the SLMS to teach digital citizenship to keep students safe online. The SLMS should also teach students how to be responsible and stay away from inappropriate material as well.

• Commonsense.org is a great resource to teach about digital citizenship. It has several lessons and activities for teachers to incorporate into their lessons.
• The Achievery is a new resource with several lessons, activities, and many other resources on digital citizenship.

Example Digital Resources

• Students could work in groups and create a brochure on the importance of digital citizenship and what it means.
• Students could also work in partners to create a role-playing skit on how to respond in different scenarios online to be digitally safe.
