-King Charles II granted the Carolina region to eight nobles, known as lords proprietor, in 1663. In the 18th century the colony was divided into South Carolina and North Carolina. -South Carolina was founded primarly for economic reasons, including farming rice, indigo, and other cash crops. -South Carolina was used for agricultural purposes, such as farming cash crops. Additionally, South carolina had natural harbors which made it easy to trade and make money from ship building and fishing

- People in South Carolina made money by primarily farming cash crops in large plantations. Such cash crops include cultivating rice, indigo, and other cash crops such as tobacco. The long growing season contributed to the large amount of agriculture. South Carolina's natural harbors were also a big deal, making fishing, trade, and ship building easily accessable.
