Adding Numbers

Adding NumbersStudents will learn how to add by using objects or pictures.

My students are first graders learning math by adding.

1.6.c Models and Visualizations Students communicate complex ideas clearly and effectively by creating or using a variety of digital objects such as visualizations, models or simulations.

1.6.a Choose Platforms or Tools Students choose the appropriate platforms and tools for meeting the desired objectives of their creation or communication.

ISTE Standards

1.OA.6 Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10. Use strategies such as counting on; making ten (e.g., 8 + 6 = 8 + 2 + 4 = 10 + 4 = 14); decomposing a number leading to a ten (e.g., 13 – 4 = 13 – 3 – 1 = 10 – 1 = 9); using the relationship between addition and subtraction (e.g., knowing that 8 + 4 = 12, one knows 12 – 8 = 4); and creating equivalent but easier or known sums (e.g., adding 6 + 7 by creating the known equivalent 6 + 6 + 1 = 12 + 1 = 13).

Task:

Directions: Giving the students more guidance. Student Choices: let the students choose which color cubes they would like to use or the bears to use as the counters.

Allow students to form groups and work together on the addition. Each group will come up with a problem to show the other students.
