Start game

Legend says that a faraway kingdom forged a sword that together with the power of the Elemental Gems (fire, water, air, and earth) could defeat any evil. Gather the gems to assemble the ultimate weapon and defeat the dragon hiding in the dungeon.

Thank goodness you’ve come! We need your help! You need to find the 4 Elemental Gems so that the sword has enough power and then defeat the fearsome dragon that is terrorizing our people…

Of course!

I guess I will because Ms. Rybolt is making me :)

Help us, only a person like you can do it!

Hehehe, I was kidding. Ahem, of course I’ll help you

Ouch! I thought you were cool ... What will become of us!

I knew you would not fail me! Thanks a lot! Here is the holy sword. Now gather the Elemental Gems to complete it and defeat the dragon.

EARTH GEM

Start level

Watch out, a wandering skeleton is in your way! Get the earth gem by correctly answering these questions…

LEVEL 1 - EARTH GEM

Where do you think you’re going, mortal?! You won’t be worthy of the Earth Gem until you get all my questions correct. Do you dare to try?

Use the five playing cards above to create a three-digit number and a two- digit number that multiply to give the greatest product. Work with your team to develop a strategy that you can explain to your teacher before moving on.

Alan and Debra were trying to decide where to place a 2 and an 8 in the boxes shown here: . Their goal was to make the largest product possible.

98 x 12

92 x 18

Alan thought that the 2 should go next to the 9 to make 92, and the 8 should go next to the 1 to make 18. Where in Alan’s picture can you see the 2 (of the 92) and the 8 (of the 18)? What about the 9 of the 92 and the 1 of the 18? What part of the picture represents the product?

If Alan and Debra had done the opposite (put the 8 with the 9 to form 98 and the 2 with the 1 to form 12), would the product (area) have been larger or smaller? Support your thinking by drawing a figure like Alan’s for this new product.

Larger

Smaller

Congratulations!! Here is your reward, you have earned it

Hahahaha, what do you say? ...

Oh, I've lost my mind, give me another chance!

Alan is working with 1 hundred block,5 ten blocks, and 6 one blocks. He wants to use all of these blocks to make another rectangle. Work with your team to help Alan arrange his blocks into a rectangle. Is there more than one way to do this?

Same

Different

Sketch two of your rectangles on your paper and label their dimensions. Are the dimensions of each of your rectangles the same, or are some of them different?

You got the Air Gem!

Find the correct answer

Answer the following questions correctly to earn this element. CLick here to move on...

Alan has another idea. This time, he is trying to multiply 12 x 13 and get an exact answer without having to build the product with Base Ten Blocks. Alan drew this diagram.

Examine Alan’s diagram and discuss with your team how it relates to the shape he built with blocks. Why did he label the sides "10+3" and "10+2"?

Perimeter of the whole shape.

Area of thw whole shape

Area of theat one rectangle inside the whole shape

Find the areas of the four smaller rectangles. The upper-left section is already done for you. In the upper-left box, show how Alan got “100.” What does the “100” represent? Then fill in the other three smaller rectangles the same way.

How can you find the total area represented by the entire rectangle? Work with your team to find at least two ways to do this.

Work with your team to help Alan draw a generic rectangle to multiply 59 x 46 and find the product.

You got the Water gem!
