Children’s social and emotional skills are strongly related to their academic success. Children who are emotionally capable of listening, following directions, and exercising patience will have a head start when it comes to learning math.

Children understand math concepts best if they use their five senses while they learn. They learn through play and physical activity (such as using food to count, sort, or talk about shapes).

We use math concepts every day to verbally categorize our surroundings. We describe the size or shape of things, patterns, quantity, measurement, and order. We have to understand math concepts to communicate these concepts.

Many math concepts are abstract. Because children think about their world in a concrete way, it’s important to present early math concepts through hands-on, real-life experiences, through daily activities and play.
