TRUMAN COMMISION REPORT

1947 - John W. Synder, then Director of the Office of War and Mobilization, reported to President Truman a staggering number of veterans attempting to receive higher education with the help of financial aid. The report called for significant changes in postsecondary education including the establishment of a network of public community colleges.

WORLD WAR 2

1939 - At the height of the war, an emphasis was placed on how to live in a democracy. As a result, school curriculum focused on the study of the history, civics, economics, sociology, social studies and geography.

IMPROVING AMERICA'S SCHOOLS ACT

1994 - This legislation re-enacted the compensatory aid made available to educationally disadvantaged students. Previously, these benefits were provided through the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965. This allowed schools the flexibility of providing extra help for disadvantage students in order to hold them accountable to the same standard as their peers.

FIRST JR HIGH SCHOOL

Sept 7, 1909 - First junior high school opens in Columbus, Ohio. Prior to the school opening, children would attend school till the eighth grade and then join the work force after completion. Jr High schools focused heavily on mathmatics and grammar.

No Child Left Behind

2002 - From 2002 to 2015, switched schools focus onto disadvantaged students (facing poverty, those who didn't speak english, families of color, students with special educational services). This law was replaced in 2015 by the Every Student Succeeds Act, which covered some of the points that the NCLB law lacked.

Red for Ed AZ

2018- Teachers in Arizona began protesting and striking against low salary and cuts in school funding. Teachers walked out of classrooms, protested on street corners, and marched to the state capitol. Over 70,000 people joined in the protest events. Ultimately, the outcome of the protests were unclear as some districts experienced significant pay raises while others remained the same.

Teacher Performance Assessment (edTPA)

2013 - Created by Standford University, Alliance for Excellent Education and the AACTE, the edTPA evalutes how preparde a teacher is to teach in a classroom setting. edTPA is a performance-based assessment that can be subject specific with versions available for over 28 teaching fields.

BROWN V BOARD OF EDUCATION

1954 - U.S. Supreme Court Justice Early Warren delivered ruiling that state-sanctioned segregation of nationally and locally funded schools were a violation of the 14th amendment and unconsitional.

BINET-SIMON SCALE

1916 - Developed in 1905 by French psychologist Alfred Binet and Theodore Simon to test the attention, memory, and verbal skill of schoolchildren. The scale was the first of standardized testing to measure student's understanding of material and measure their intellegence.

TITLE IX

1972 - Title IX prohibits discrimation or exlcusion from an educational program, that is receiving federal financial assistance, based on sex, gender identity or related topics.

A NATION AT RISK

1983 - A report from Secretary of Education Terrel H. Bell stating that the education system was in need of reform as there was a rise in mediocrity. The reform, following the report, would increase rigorous material learned in schools and revaluate teacher performance.

CIVIL RIGHTS ACT

1964 - Eleven Titles that authorize the Attorney General to enact suits in regards to the protection of public education, extend the Commission on Civil Rights and the Commission on Equal Employment Opporunity.
