Bell ringer

The works of Edgar Allan Poe (1809–1849) set the standard for Gothic fiction. “The Tell-Tale Heart” is one of his most famous and widely read stories. Convinced that officers at his house can hear the dead man’s heart beating through the floorboard, Poe’s narrator confesses to killing an old man in his care, despite the fact he bore the man no grudge. In a dramatic monologue of increasing volume and intensity—as well as mental disintegration—the “perfectly sane” murderer painstakingly describes how the “vulture eye” of his victim drove him to commit the horrible act.*Watch StudySync Video
