Selma Marches

The Selma Marchers were marches from Selma, Alabama to Montgomery, Alabama. There were 3 marches, the first one was stopped short due to police officers blocking the hikers to get any further, they used tear gas, they beat up people while riding horses, and scared the protesters away. The second march was stopped short by a barricade of police officers. The third and final march was protected by soldiers that Lyndon B. Johnson sent to protect the hikers. They had finally completed the 54 mile hike. Because of this, The Voting Rights Act of 1954 was signed.

Room 02

Assasination of MLK

MLK was standing on his balcony at Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee on April 4, 1968. Shortly after 6 p.m., James Earl Ray shot MLK while he was standing on his balcony. MLK was pronounced dead at about 7:05 p.m. this was very tragic. This sparked the Black Power movement, and it signaled a seam end of a period of civil rights progress that MLK had led.

Brown vs Board of Education

Schools were segregated in the South, and Oliver Brown was done. He was tired of segregated schools in the south. So, he took the Board of Education to court in Topeka, Kansas. The Supreme Court ruled in 1954 that schools will have to be integrated. However, there were no deadlines, so many schools never actually integrated. However, it did lead to many other protests to integrate public facilities.
