Timeline: American Revolution

1775-1783

Significance/Importance of Battle:

Lexington & Concord

The Battles of Lexington and Concord were the first battles of the American Revolution, known for "the shot heard 'round the world". The Battle of Lexington was initiated because the British were planning on arresting Smauel Adams and John Hancock. The Battle of Concord was initiated because the British had marched to Concord to destroy weapons and ammunition the militia was storing there.

Outcome of the Congress:

Second Continental Congress

The Second Continental Congress met in Philadelphia, PA to form the Continental Army (or the colonial army). George Washington was selected to become the leader of the army by the Second Continental Congress because of his fighting experience during the French and Indian War.

Impact of the Role of Women & Republican Motherhood:

Remember the Ladies

During the Revolution, women were put in charge of teaching the children about republican values, known as Republican Motherhood. Along with this, women began to advocate for equal rights, John Adams' own wife, Abigail Adams, being an avid supporter of this movement, known for her quote, "Remeber the Ladies".

Declaration of Independence

The Declaration of Independence was written to list off the many complaints about King George III and how he violated colonial rights. The colonist had been violated and wanted independence from Britain because of it.

"The Crisis"

Impact of The Crisis:

Thomas Paine wrote The Crisis, which was a message to the American people encouraging them to support the troops in the Revolution. During these times, the colonists were struggling due to the ongoing Revolution, so in order to keep their hopes and spirits up, Paine encouraged them to support the troops and lead them to victory.

Battle of Saratoga

Significance of the Battle of Saratoga:

This battle is known as the turning point of the Revolution. During this battle, France had been pursueded to join the Patriots in their battle for independence.

Valley Forge

Significance of Valley Forge:

Valley Forge was a camp for George Washington and his troops to train during the winter for upcomng wars and battles. There was a harsh winter during there stay that resulted in many disasters and harships.

Significance of the Battle of Yorktown:

Battle of Yorktown

Washington and the French General Jean Rochambeau marched forced into South Virginia and trapped British General Lord Charles Cornwallis in Yorktown. Here, they stopped the British troops from leaving and eventually led the British to surrender, which became a key victory that earned the Americans their independence.

Treaty of Paris, 1783

The Treaty of Paris marks the US becoming officially independent. They created the borders, recieved fishing rights, agreed to repay debts, made British return all slaves they captured, and allowed the French, Americans, and Spanish to become allied and fully rewarded for efforts.
