THE YEARS OF CIVIL RIGHTS AND ROAD TO FREEDOM

I have a dream speech

Back to home

On August 28, 1963, Martin Luther King Junior delivered a speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. It was a very important event in gaining support for Civil Rights Laws because the African-American community had been treated unfairly. The speech that came out of King's mouth was originally supposed to be short, but he felt so strongly about the injustices against blacks and their suffering of them and brought up past points he spoke about. This was one of the most iconic speeches in history.

SELMA MARCHES

ARTIFACTS

Back to home

The Selma Marches took place in Selma, Alabama. The marches were set out to bring attention to the voting campaign that had a record of consistent resistance to black voting, The first march took place on March 7, 1965, which ended badly and was not very sucsessful. The second march took place on March 9th, 1965, where it also ended abruptly. The third march finally took place on March 21, 1965, which was finally the sucsess they needed.

ROSA PARKS & BUS BOYCOTT

Back to home

On December 1, 1955, Rosa Parks entered the segregated bus, and refused to give up her seat on the bus for a white person. Rosa Parks worked for the NAACP and said that she was tired of white people telling her what to do. The Montgomery Improvement Association led by Martin Luther King Jr organized the Bus Boycott. The Montgomery boycott was 99% of African Americans who decided to boycott the buses because of unfair treatment. The boycott had worked, because the bus companies realized fighting wasn't worth losing business over, and since they had already lost so much profit, they decided to choose peace.

+ Info

this picture shows the united front and everyone marching in the third march
people were brutally beat and treated with violence
posters were hung up and displayed all over
devoting rights act of 1965 was a result of the Selma Marches 250,000 new black voters had been registered and this was very important because this is what the blacks had been fighting for for so long this changed the future of voting rights for blacks forever
On the third March, MLK led the march and over 2000 US soldiers protected them! 250,000 attended this march! Crazy right!? This is really important because after the violence that they went through they had the soldiers on their side and it made a huge impact.
On March 7th, the first march, they were me met with violence from armed state troopers who used paragraphs clubs and dogs to distill the blacks This was horrible for the marches but they still preserved for two more marches that then resulted in the voting rate act of 1965 They were determined to fight for what was right even with this violence
