1775-1783

Significance/Importance of Battle:

Lexington & Concord

Lexington and Concord were the first battles of the American Revolution. Colonists openly defied British authority which marked the beginning of the war against England. These two became known as the "The shot heard round the world".

Outcome of the Congress:

Second Continental Congress

Second Continential Congress sent Olive Branch Petition to King George lll, which asked for the restoration of friendly relations. When this petition was ignored by England, delegates began to form the Continental army. They selected George Washington to lead this army because of his achievements in the French and Indian War.

Impact of the Role of Women & Republican Motherhood:

Remember the Ladies

Women wanted more roles in society and politics, one of the main advocates for this was Abigail Adams. She sought equal political participation and education for women. In addition to this, Republican Motherhood became a movement that encouraged women to teach republican values to their families.

Significance of the Declaration of Independence:

Declaration of Independence

On July 4th, 1776, colonial delegates assembled to draft the Declaration of Independence. This document aired the colonial greviences against King George lll and officially stated that the 13 colonies were to become a separate nation from England.

Impact of The Crisis:

Thomas Paine drafted a message urging Americans to support the troops fighting in the Revolution. Soldiers had enlistments that only lasted 3-6 months and many were not re-enlisting.

Battle of Saratoga

Significance of the Battle of Saratoga:

This battle became known as the turning point of the Revolution. Because of the American victory against British troops, France and Spain were persuaded to support the Patriots.

Valley Forge

Significance of Valley Forge:

1/5 of American soldiers in Valley Forge died from disease and starvation due to food shortages and harsh winters. George Washington recieved help from Baron von Steuben who was German and Marquis de Lafayette who was French to train troops.

Significance of the Battle of Yorktown:

Battle of Yorktown

This battle marked the end of the American Revolution. American and French troops trapped the British general Lord Cornwallis in the town of Yorktown. The British were forced to surrender as they had no way of fleeing from their enemy.

Treaty of Paris, 1783

Document officially stated that the U.S. was independent from England. All the territory to the Mississipi River and from Spanish Florida to the Canadian border went to the Americans.
