1775-1783

Significance/Importance of Battle:

Lexington & Concord

The very first battles of the revolution that are also known as "the shot heard round the world". Lexington was caused by the British attempted arrest of Samuel Adams and John Hancock while Concord was the British trying to sieze colonial weapons

Outcome of the Congress:

Second Continental Congress

Delegates were scared to seperate from Britain so they sent the Olive Branch Petition, but was ignored. They also created a Contentinal army in which George Washington was elected leader due to his previous experience in the French and Indian war.

Impact of the Role of Women & Republican Motherhood:

Remember the Ladies

Women formed the Daughters of Liberty and wanted the expansion of political and general roles within society. Republican Motherhood called for women to teach republican values within their families. Abigail Adams was a significant figure at this time becuase she fought for women's rights.

Significance of the Declaration of Independence:

Declaration of Independence

Addressed the grievances of the colonies and insisted that King George was violating colonial rights. This document was the offical point in which colonists decided to officially declare independece from Britian.

Impact of The Crisis:

This was Thomas Paine's message to the colonial people to support American troops as many did not stay enlisted long. Paine used very direct and abrasive language to convince the colonists, and it worked.

Battle of Saratoga

Significance of the Battle of Saratoga:

Saratoga was the turning point in the revolution as the colonists were losing hard at this point. This victory persuaded the French and the Spanish to support the American revolution.

Valley Forge

Significance of Valley Forge:

Valley Forge winter hit the colonists hard as roughly 2000 soldiers were killed. However during this time Washington was able to train his troops better with the help of Baron von Steuben.

Battle of Yorktown

Significance of the Battle of Yorktown:

This was the last major battle that ended in colonial victory. The French and Americans forced the British Gen. Cornwallis to surrender after he was cornered by their forces.

Oct 1781

Explain what America gains:

Treaty of Paris, 1783

Britain formally recongizes American as it's own seperate country and officially ended the war. They also gain land west of the Appalachian Mountains
