The horrific events in Birmingham

Children marched and they were attacked by police dogs and were sprayed with fire hoses. When the country saw what was happening they decided it was time to make change. this is in my opinion the most important event in integration because no one will support you if everyone thinks everything is fine.

Martin Luther King led many marches and gave many speeches his most famous speech was the I Have a Dream speech. He gave this speech after leading the march on Washington. Martian luther King also helped to lead the Selma marches and helped to draw attention to the way black people were treated. he was assassinated on the balcony of his hotel room in tenesee because of his work with the civil rights movement.

The civil rights legislation banned poll taxes and created equal voting and civil rights for all people. This law made poll taxes and literacy tests illegal as well as outlawing segregation and undoing the Plessy vs Ferguson decision. before these laws were passed anyone white person could assault or insult any black person and get away with it. after these laws were passed things changed.

These are all newspaper headlines of the civil rights laws and acts being passed. This made headlines because the South was so heavily segregated that people would not want to change. This impacted every person in the country. Plus the newspapers would make a lot of money from these major news stories. Today there is not a newspaper headline for every law that is passed instead it only makes the papers if it affects people severely.

In 1954 the NAACP took the case brown vs Board of Education to the Supreme Court ruled that segregated schools could never be equal and ordered that schools be segregated with all deliberate speed. of course, this did not work because there was no deadline.
