The Writers Guild of America (WGA) officially goes on strike after contract negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) break down. The main issues at stake are compensation for digital media and jurisdiction over reality and animation writing.

September 27, 2023

The WGA reached a tentative agreement on with the AMPTP that outlines the use of artificial intelligence, streaming residuals, weekly pay increases and more. The term of agreement is valid from Sept. 25 of this year to May 1, 2026.

August 4, 2023

The WGA and AMPTP agree to resume contract negotiations on August 11, 2023, after a period of stalemate. While there is progress on some issues, talks remain unresolved on key proposals, including success-based residual payments from streaming services.

April 18, 2023

97.85% of WGA members vote in favor of a strike if a satisfactory agreement with the AMPTP is not reached by May 1.

May 2, 2023

On the eve of May 2, 2023, the leadership of the WGAW and WGAE unanimously approves the strike, marking the first such strike since the 2007-2008 strike. The WGA sets guidelines for its members during the strike, prohibiting writers from engaging in writing, revising, pitching, or discussing future projects with companies that are members of the AMPTP.

February 12, 2008

After 100 days of striking, the WGA reaches a tentative agreement with the AMPTP. The strike comes to an end, allowing television and film production to resume. The agreement includes improvements in compensation for digital content and jurisdiction over new media.
