ALGERIA

The northern portion, an area of mountains, valleys, and plateaus between the Mediterranean and the Sahara Desert, forms an integral part of the section of North Africa known as the Maghreb.

Algeria comprises 2,381,740 square kilometres of land, more than 80% of which is desert, in North Africa, between Morocco and Tunisia. It is the largest country in Africa. Its Arabic name is Al Jazair.

The period between the 7th and the 14th century A.D had the majority of locals converted to Islam, making Algeria part of the Ottoman empire in the 1500s. In the early 19th century, Algeria was part of the Ottoman Empire. However, France began to assert its influence in the region, and by the mid-19th century it had occupied much of Algeria.

CLOTHES

Modern Algerians wear a mix of traditional and European clothing. Traditionally, men wear a white woolen cloak, called a the gandoura, over a cotton shirt. Sometimes, the also wear linen or wool burnous over the shoulders. Women are draped head to feet in the haik, traditional women's garment worn in the maghreb region that can be black or white althought it is usually white,worn over loose pants that gather at the ankle.

These are just some examples of Algeria's delicious cuisine!

Swabaa Zainab (Zinab’s Fingers) is a delicious Algerian sweet. It is made of semolina, flour, sugar, and butter, and, although it is typically baked in an oven, you may also find fried versions – when the oil is diluted with sugar syrup.

Usban is a tasty dish.The sausage casing is made from the intestines of cows, lambs, or camels which are stuffed with vegetables such potatoes, eggplant, or even fish and sometimes couscous.

Zviti is a very spicy dish prepared using green pepper, cooked with dough, then cut with a wooden masher, and typically served in a wooden bowl. In some cities, sliced tomatoes, coriander, green olives, and sometimes garlic are used.

Chekhchoukha is one of the tastiest foods in Algeria, so don’t be put off by the hard-to-pronounce name. This delicious stew is made from torn pieces of a thin flatbread (rougag, or marqa) with lamb, tomatoes, chickpeas, onions, and spices, including cumin, ras el hanout, caraway, galangal, lavender, and red chili peppers.

LANGUAGES SPOKEN IN ALGERIA

Algeria is home to many languages and cultures. The most common languages are Berber and Arabic with over 99% of Algerians speaking them. Around 90% of Algerians speak Arabic and 10-20% of Algerians speaking Berber. Although French is not an established language, it has heavily influenced Algeria with over 69% of Algerians speaking French.
