Care: Throughout time, children have spent their formative years in institutional care. Many issues overtime have arose from these institutions, in regards what’s best for the child. The root of these issues is based on the unequal constructions of childhood overtime. For example, carceral care has created issues in schools surrounding punishment, which can lead to stigmatization of the child withing their community. Moreover, law enforcement has been tied into these organizations and institutions, where students are constantly under observations and repeatedly punished in school. In turn, this can cause feelings of confinement, where the student is continually watched. Furthermore, carceral care instills fear of punishment within these children, creating future systematic issues, like exclusion, abandonment, and rejection among children in schools. Rather than focusing on punishment, an education system based on care can foster systematic issues present within in society, rather than exacerbating these issues. In other sectors of care, such as residential and behavioral treatment centers, issues arise regarding children well-being and autonomy. For example, Sequel treatment centers were meant to foster youths’ behavioral problems and provided specialized care for youth at risk. Instead, many issues regarding children being sexually and physically assaulted were present within these centers, thus pushing for the bill, Stop Institutional Child Abuse Act, meant to improve the treatment of youth in institutional care. Alternative pathways focus on building and fostering youths trust, shrink incarceration and policing, identify root causes of behavior rather than reducing people to their actions, and identify processes that work naturally specific to each community’s situation.

Youth and mental health: Due to many of these systematic issues in institutions, many children have depleting mental health. Moreover, 1 in 5 children experience mental health issues, which can be defined as a mental health crisis for youth in the US. In addition, it is already extremely hard for youth to have access to adequate mental health care. An education-based care system can help nurture youth and their wellbeing, which could stop at risk youth from needing future psychiatric care. Another aspect associated with child’s poor mental health can be due to generational trauma from the mother. Thus, demonstrating systematic issues throughout time have created a ripple effect on children for the future. One of the biggest issues surrounding the exacerbation of mental health issues in children is the number of children in foster care. Moreover, foster care and displacements from the home cause PTSD and complex traumas, at rates five times higher than the average adult. With the help of child welfare services, a holistic approach is needed to promote reformation of the system, and to lessen the chances of youth developing trauma. A holistic approach can create a positive impact on children by guiding youth to navigate life challenges and providing them with healthy coping strategies. This can be done from within the system whether it be proper training for foster parents or providing youth with stable and nurturing placements.

Policing Families:Many families continue to be a part of family policing systems, which is one of the most common standards created by state and policymakers. This system seems to promote neglect, so the state can supply families with “needed” preventative services, in turn keeping the families under surveillance in the system. Moreover, policing families creates exclusion, due to certain families being judged and punished for practices and conduct that other families wouldn’t be investigated for. Holding parents to a certain standard contradicts the abandonment and harms caused by the states neglect. In addition, removing these children from their home and pushing them into foster care, punishes the child as well, because of the disruptions caused by displacing them. For example, putting a child into a new home causes aspects of their life to change, such as religious and cultural practices, feelings of safety and security, connections to community, friends, and family. This significant life change may cause trauma, which can create behavioral problems, in turn criminalizing youths behavior through exclusionary discipline practices. Overall, policing families causes displaced youth, and the many changes they experience through this can cause negative implications for their mental health and overall wellbeing. Furthermore, these issues have an effect on youths behavior in school, which further demonstrate how these issues become rooted within the system, showing the cycle of systematic issues repeating themselves. Abolishing systems of punishment, such as family policing, move towards sustaining relational networks that help children within the community and decrease maltreatment issues.

Moreover, she explains how prison was seperated by wealth and poverty. Mary was all alone and left to the streets, when her mom who had schizophenia kicked her out. She was pushed into the system and put into the care of an orphanage. She experienced adultification bias around her, because adults expected her to be emotionally rationale, despite being apart of ACES. Throughput her youth she had been in and out of residential treatment facilities, which effected her behavior, due to the disfunction she expeirienced throughout her childhood. These expeiriences put her at risk for criminilization because she was unable to break systematic, educational, social, and societal barriers. Unable to get a job, she turned to crime as a means of getting by, such as bulglary and selling narcotics. After her imprisonment, she put her energy into music to help her create a sense of community for herself. Through this, she was able to decrease her risk of criminilzation, help empower and advocate for others like herself, and decrease their pathways to criminlization.
