ARTICLE ONE

The United Nations has warned that extreme heat is "the new normal". Climate change is causing more heatwaves and making them longer and hotter. Many countries have had record hot weather in the past week. In parts of the USA and China, the mercury went over 50ºC. In Death Valley, California, it was 53.9ºC; and in Xinjiang, China, it got up to 52.2ºC. European countries and Japan have issued heat alerts. They asked people to stay in the shade and drink plenty of water. The UN warned the heatwaves could continue for another month.

ARTICLE TWO

Many people monitor how many steps they walk every day. Research suggests that 10,000 steps a day is enough for us to stay healthy and live longer. A new study says just 4,000 steps a day could be enough for us to live to an old age. Researchers analyzed 17 studies that looked at how far people walked during the week. They concluded that 4,000 steps per day lowered the risk of dying from diabetes, heart diseases and other life-threatening conditions. The study said 4,000 steps is the same as a 30- to 45-minute walk, or about three to four kilometres.

The study is published in a cardiology journal. Researchers looked at exercise data from 225,000 adults worldwide over seven years. The adults had an average age of 64 and had different levels of health. The lead researcher said 4,000 steps was enough, but it wasn't a "magic number". He added that the more steps you take, the better. He also said walking an additional 1,000 steps per day could lead to a roughly 15 per cent lower risk of premature death. The researcher said people should add at least one walk to their daily routine.

ARTICLE THREE

UNESCO has given an award to a festival in South Korea. It decided to add South Korea's Lotus Lantern Festival to its list of intangible cultural heritage. The festival is one of 25 things the UN added to its heritage list this year. Some things that UNESCO adds to its heritage list are tangible - meaning we can touch them. Examples are the Pyramids in Egypt or Machu Picchu in Peru. If something is intangible, we cannot touch it. Events like South Korea's Lotus Lantern Festival or a dance or a method for weaving baskets are examples of intangible heritage.

The South Korean festival is held in spring to celebrate Buddha's birthday. It symbolizes lighting up the world to make things fair for everyone. The festival dates back 2,000 years. There was an ancient temple in 57BC that royals visited to see lotus lanterns. Today, it is one of Korea's biggest festivals. People decorate temples with lanterns made of paper and bamboo. Villages, towns and cities hold parades where people carry lanterns through the streets. A spokesperson said: "We will try to make the festival a cultural heritage that can be loved by people around the world."

ARTICLE FOUR

Have you ever thought why thinking makes us tired? A new study has found some answers. Researchers from the Paris Brain Institute looked at why mental effort makes us tired. When people think a lot, their brain releases a chemical called glutamate. Too much of this changes the brain's functions. It tells the body it is tired and that we must rest. People who spend six hours working on a task that requires thinking are more likely to feel tired. Resting helps the brain to return to normal. This explains why a power nap is good for us. A 20-minute power nap can make us feel totally refreshed.

The researchers looked at the behaviour of 40 participants. Twenty-four of these performed challenging tasks. These included looking at a computer screen and matching different letters. The other 16 people did a similar, but easier task. Both teams worked for six hours, and had two breaks. The researchers scanned the brains of the participants. The group with the more difficult task had higher levels of glutamate in their brain. Study author Antonius Wiehler said: "It would be great to find out more about how glutamate levels are restored."
