THE hISTORY OF THE CIPD
The Birth of the CIPD
Dating back to 1913, the CIPD was initially called the Welfare Workers' Association (WWA) and was set up to protect the wellbeing of female factory workers. With the changing landscape of war and industrial relations, the WWA evolved over a series of years to reflect the needs of its people.

A Changing Landscape
The WWA experienced some name changes to reflect the new labour movement of the late 1920s, and later, in the 1940s, the members' increased focus on industrial relations and industrial training.

The History of the CIPD
In 1994, the Institute of Personnel and Development (IPD) was formed by merging the Institute of Personnel Management with the Institute of Training and Development. The IPD gained chartered status in 2000 and has since been known as the CIPD.
