Classroom Instruction that Works: Intro

- Robert J. Marzano

Educational research is not a blunt instrument that shatters all doubt about best practice. Rather it provides general direction that must be interpreted by individual districts, schools, and teachers in terms of their unique circumstances. In short, research will never be able to identify instructional strategies that work with every student in every class. The best research can do is tell us which strategies have a good chance of working well wtih students.

Research Based Practices

As with anything else, instructional practices should be evidence-based. Instruction that is grounded in research is more likely to reach students. Not to say that a strategy will work just because it's research based, but it gives you an indication of its impact with students.

The importance of research in our practices:

Choose one of the following to research, fill out the graphic organizer, and explain to your colleagues:
  • Direct Instruction
  • Small group instruction
  • Metacognitive strategies
OR
  • Something else you are interested in researching
  • Flipped classroom
  • Anticipatory guide
  • Reciprocal teaching
  • Problem-based learning
