CRITICAL REVIEW
One of the competencies that university students must develop during their academic training is the writing of academic texts. To do so, they must know not only the written code, but also the textual typologies and their genres in order to adjust the content to the structure of these, such as, for example, the critical review. Although this type of discursive genre can be done on different cultural products (a film, an academic article, a play, etc.), this presentation will provide guidelines for writing a critical review of a book.

The reviewer condenses his/her position or point of view on the base text in order to:
- Recommend its reading (for its contributions to science, technology, art, etc.).
- Suggest that it is not worth reading (in a respectful manner, that is, without using derogatory language).
- The name of the author or the names of the authors and the title of the original text are rewritten.
- Fundamental biographical data about the author or authors of the work is included.
- The main (global) idea, objective or thesis of the base text is presented.
Data that identify the reviewed work: - author- year of publication- title of the work- publisher- number of pages
- Summary of the reviewed work: the fundamental contents of the base text are presented in a selective and condensed manner, taking into account the way the work is constructed (sections, chapters, etc.).
- Critical-argued commentary on the base text: the compelling reasons (evaluative judgments) are provided to support the successes and failures found in the work read.
