But he finds himself in the presence of Artful Dodger ( pickpocket ) who tells him to stay at an "old gentleman"'s home (called Fagin) with other guys. Oliver finds out that these guys are trained pickpockets. On a field trip, Oliver sees the boys take a tissue from Mr. Brownlow, an elderly man, who urges Oliver to escape. The old man thinks Oliver is the villain and has him arrested. After finding out more about Oliver, Mr. Brownlow realizes his mistake and offers to take care of Oliver at his home.

Nancy, a prostitute, and Sikes, who are lovers, are sent to pick up Oliver from Mr. Brownlow. They do so successfully and Oliver is sent on a robbery mission with another member of the group to the countryside around London. In this mission, Oliver and the group try to rob The Maylies but he is shot in the arm and then taken by the family and they helped him. While he is there, Fagin and a man named Monks plan to bring him back, but Nancy informs mr. Brownlow of Monks' plans .

Rose Maylie, on a trip to London with her family, meets Mr. Brownlow who has talked to Nancy and she explained to him what Fagin and Monks want to do to bring Oliver back. Unfortunately for Nancy, news of her betrayal reaches Sikes, her boyfriend, and he beats her to death. The Maylies reunite Oliver with Mr. Brownlow, who forces Monks to explain. Oliver is informed that Monks is his half-brother and that Oliver is entitled to a large fortune. He receives his share of the money, Fagin is hanged, and the Maylies, Oliver, and Mr. Brownlow move to the countryside where they spend the rest of their days together.
