10 TIPS

TO IMPROVE THE RELATIONSHIP WITHYOUR SONS AND DAUGHTERS.

Set a close and stable affective relationship with them.

Be a good reference model for your children.

Facilitate and support their learning.

Boost their emotional intelligence.

Allow them to beactive people in their development.

Focus your attention on their strengths and capabilities.

They are creating their identity and they need you in another way.

Accept that some of their behaviors are necessary.

Trust your educational work developed in childhood.

A family environment that conveys security, confidence, and provides clear and consistent guidelines regarding what is expected of them Try to establish stable rules with your children in an environment of dialogue, understanding, active listening (listening to understand, not to respond) and negotiation. It will be easier for them to accept and adhere to them.

The family has to readapt itself at each stage. It is important that you do not to impose your own criteria, yet also do not disappear as a figure of reference during this stage. Accompany them at this stage with patience, dialogue and understanding.

Make sure your sons and daughters feel loved and accepted in the family and support them so that they can also achieve it in other areas (school, social, etc.). Express positive emotions to them and make it easier for them to do it as well.

Avoid constantly fixating your attention on problematic behaviors, as this could potentially encourage them to become chronic and exacerbate the seriousness of the situation. Instead, channel your efforts towards nurturing behaviors and attitudes that are mature and responsible.

Your sons and daughters imitate your behaviors and learn from them. Try to act assertively with dialogue and respect other people, be coherent with what you do and say, accept mistakes and frustration, focus on the positive aspects of the situation, reflect thoughfully before making a decision, etc

Do it by recognizing, understanding and managing emotions. It encourages them to name their emotions, to express how they feel in various situations, to detect negative thoughts and how they influence their emotions and behavior, and to reflect on other people's emotions.

Both for academic and other types of learning (emotional, social...), emphasize the positive, mature and healthy aspects and value their attempts to improve after mistakes.

Make sure they make reasoned decisions and resolve conflicts, to assume the consequences in this process, to develop their autonomy, to reflect on their ability to influence the environment and to question established values and norms.

During adolescence you might have the feeling that the son or daughter has unlearned everything that you inculcate them during childhood, bear in mind that this is not the case and that the basic pillars of education remain. The role of parents in education is an ongoing process, and during this stage, they have different needs.

Adolescence is a period of experimentation and learning. Sons and daughters are developing their identity (who I am) and their autonomy (what I can do) and they need to distance themselves from their parents to achieve this. Respect their opinions and accept that they are people with their own ideas, values, attitudes and behaviors.
