LSA

Tier 3 Learning Support Assistants, (LSAs) all hold a full, nationally recognised qualification in Additional Learning Support and are, as such, qualified professional practitioners.

What is an LSA?

Our Learning Support Assistants (LSA) are one part of a team of committed, student-centred, well-trained professionals working in every area and at every level of college, ensuring those with learning differences have the opportunity to thrive and succeed.

Tier 2 LSA

Tier 1 LSAs are specialists in an area of SEN, alongside the level 3 support qualification, they also hold a level 6 qualification in an aspect of SEN.

Tier 2 are all qualified practitioners to at least Level 3 in learning support. In addition to this, Tier 2 LSAs hold another level 3 qualification in a learning difference specialism e.g., ASD, Dyslexia, etc..

Tier 1 communicators are highly skilled in BSL, deaf awareness and communication. They are level 3 support qualified and level 3+ qualified in BSL and communication support.

Role: Tier 3 Learning Support Assistants, (LSAs) all hold a full nationally recognised qualification in Additional Learning Support and are, as such, qualified practitioners. As support professionals they have the expertise to support students with a variety of learning differences. The training means that they are proficient in working across subjects, across levels, with different tutors with different teaching styles. They individualise their communication and support styles to meet the individual needs of each of their students even when working with them in a group support. Contract: Term Time +2 Requirements: AS Tier 4 and full Level 3 Learning Support Practitioner qualification and level 2 English and Maths Responsibility: AS Tier 4, Being a buddy, Supporting CPD Payscale: £20,103.00 per annum pro rata Department’s pledge - To pay for the level 3 course and support any English and/or Maths development.

Role: As with Tier 3 LSAs, Tier 2 all are qualified practitioner to at least Level 3 in learning support. In addition to this, Tier 2 LSAs hold another level 3 qualification in a learning difference specialism e.g., ASD, Dyslexia, etc. These LSA use their knowledge and skills to support students but also to support other LSAs in their specialism too. They may run CPD sessions or advise on a one-to-one basis. Role: Tier 1 LSAs are specialists in an area of SEN, alongside the level 3 support qualification, they also hold a level 6 qualification in an aspect of SEN. These LSA’s are expected to deliver CPD, share their skills and work with those students that require their specialism as well as working with other students across the sites. They use their knowledge and skills do develop resources and inform improvement in practice. They offer training to staff across the campus and work closely with any tutor who has a hearing-impaired student in the classroom regardless of the need for BSL. They also offer training to student facing, non-academic staff about clear communication. What other roles are there in Curriculum Services?

We have a range of roles within the Curriculum Services Department which we positively encourage LSAs to work towards if they wish to.

A rewarding role combining supporting learners in the classroom and managing the day-to-day activities of a team of 15+ LSAs

An EHCP advisor is responsible for a caseload of students, ensuring that their needs are met before and during their time at college.

A Team leader ensures that students are well supported, staff feel valued, and processes have been followed within college, local and national expectations.

A coordinator's main responsibility is to ensure student and staff timetables are kept accurate, updated and all relevant parties are informed of any changes made.

SpLD advisors undertake specialist assessments for dyslexia and other specific learning difficulties for exam access applications in line with JCQ guidelines and SEN Code of Practice.

Contract: Term time +2 Requirements: A L3 Learning support qualification (or willingness to work towards it), L3 GCSE maths and English qualifications. Evidence of experience and/or qualifications to be able to manage teams and systems in line with the needs of the department and the Ways of Working Responsibility: Supporting students in the classroom and managing a team of LSAs with all aspects of their roles, including:

  • Inducting a new LSA.
  • Completing profile audits and relevant paperwork
  • Carrying out learning walks and direct session reviews and completing relevant paperwork
  • Managing the team's sickness, absences, unpaid leave and Bradford scores
  • Managing the teams CPD hours and ensuring they all complete all the hours.
  • Being an outstanding role model for all LSAs.
  • Leading on CPD sessions.
  • Holding team meetings.
  • Dealing with any disciplinary issues as the first intervention.
  • Working collaboratively with the other supervisors to create consistent processes, systems etc.
  • Any other management activities you are asked to help with.

Payscale: £24,872 - £26,544 per annum pro rata (Actual £21,941 - £23,416 per annum) Department’s pledge - To support identification of relevant courses and offer shadowing opportunities/support as required.

Contract: Up to 37 hours per week, 52 weeks per year Requirements: A Level 3 or above qualification in a management related qualification. Recent, relevant experience of successfully managing and leading a team. Experience of working in a support setting. Recent relevant experience of understanding a range of learning difficulties and/or disabilities and arranging the effective support to meet the individuals’ requirements and auditing funding claim evidence. Responsibility: To manage one or more staff teams and take a lead role to ensure its holistic development, to enable each team member to carry out their individual duties to an excellent standard, ensuring a positive learner journey for students, and a good quality support provision to students with learning difficulties and or disabilities. To work with the team leader team taking responsibility for one or more legal aspects of the department under the guidance of the director of SEN – HR processes, EHCP regulations, Exam access arrangements, CPD provision, Recruitment, Health and Safety and compliance. Ensuring that all students are supported to meet their needs by assimilating any documentation and allocating suitable support ensuring correct funding is calculated and claimed for each student. To ensure that these plans are established into a complex timetabling system through a prioritisation system working with coordinators. A team leader must be confident, able to work with others and on their own and keep an overview of what the individuals, department, and college need. They need to be a professional role model and ambassador for the college, prepared to share information, deliver CPD sessions, sit in meetings and make a meaningful appropriate contribution. To work closely with the team leaders and director of SEND. Payscale: SO2/3 £30,308.00 - £34,610.00 Department’s pledge - To support identification of relevant courses and offer shadowing opportunities/support as required.

Contract: Full/Part Time Requirements: A relevant qualification in specialist area, A Level 3 or above qualification in Advice & Guidance, and Level 2 or above qualifications in English, Maths and IT Responsibility: To carry out Annual Reviews, meet students and parents and ensure that the key aspects of the EHCP are being put in place within the parameters of 'best endeavours'. To work with all internal and external stakeholders to ensure communication and student: centred support is in place. Payscale: Scale Scale 6 £24,872 -26,544 based on full time Department’s pledge - To support identification of relevant courses and offer shadowing opportunities/support as required.

Contract: Part Time Requirements: Level 2 or above qualifications in English and Maths, Previous experience in administration and working with young people Responsibility: Support the management of Curriculum Services, providing accurate data that supports academic and professional services of colleagues, Identify issues and opportunities in the creation of the timetable, providing solutions to resource needs and Provide reporting data and support on the curriculum management data as required, contributing to tasks that will enable other aspects of timetabling e.g., exam cover, etc. ensures that staff absence is covered.. To be the point of contact for staff, students and parents. Payscale: Scale 5 £22,188 - 21,628.00 full time salary.

Contract: Full/Part Time Requirements: A teaching qualification, Level 7 post-graduate certificate in assessing students with SpLD , Level 2 or above qualification in IT, Level 3 or above qualifications in English and Maths. Responsibility: Under the direction of the SEN manager, plan and provide providing SpLD and other assessments, developing and operating systems for assessing SEN such as dyslexia, working with other educational professionals in the preparation of assessments for students, preparing reports based on these assessments for use by other teaching staff, and for negotiation of examination and other assessment arrangements. Providing exam support e.g. as a reader or scribe when required. To work closely with the Exams team to ensure that relevant guidelines are adhered to and applications for access arrangements are made and recorded in a timely and efficient manner. Payscale: Grade Lecturing scale - £30,734 - £36,710 per annum pro rata

A sessional lecturer is a part time tutor delivering an FE curriculum to students under the guidance of the head of area.

The role of a Head of Area is to oversee the teaching and learning of staff and students within a curriculum area.

To carry out all organisational and administrative work, preparation and marking associated with teaching responsibilities. To include (but not limited to) the provision of lesson plans, schemes of work and assessment schedules. 3. To contribute to College administration and the administration of education and training programmes. 4. To participate in staff appraisal and related activities and undertake staff development and training arising from this or from the needs of the College. 5. To participate in appropriate team and course meetings. 6. To provide initial curriculum related advice and guidance, and carry out interviewing, induction, assessment and examination (including invigilation activities) of students as required. 7. To undertake student attendance monitoring, follow up and reporting including (but not limited to) the referral to the Pal Team. 8. To assist with the capture of student data relating to retention rates, examination and other assessment results, student progress, placement details, student destinations and student satisfaction surveys. 9. Responsibility: To manage and lead a high quality, leisure learning curriculum to meet local community needs. and lead on management of relevant projects as the need arises. The head of department would be responsible for the department's staff, curriculum planning and development, financial management, cross-department liaison, and teaching delivery. A head of department normally teaches around 400 - 500 hours per annum. To carry out HNF and EHCP activity for mental health and other related needs. Opportunities

We offer roles to trained and untrained LSAs with a passion for support.We then offer training to a nationally recognised standard alongside specialist training to meet the needs of students.Once the LSA has attained their level 3 learning support qualification, we then discuss with them what they would like to do going forward and support them in their progression.At least 10% each year move into other roles internally or externally after this time. Most move on internally which means that the students benefit from a whole college team with a strong knowledge of SEN and inclusive practice.

As a support department, we take the role of supporting our staff very seriously and offer Departmental pledges to support any LSA to work towards their goal.

We highly value the skills and knowledge LSAs bring and develop within their role.They are the most adaptable, versatile team working with students.They have the ability to work with numerous members of staff, a diverse variety of unique students who have a range of learning differences in a multitude of subject areas. It takes a very talented person to be able to adapt their approaches, communication and knowledge set to accomodate all of this and they work hard to refine their skills.We are proud to support those that wish to move to other roles within the college.We do this through our departmental pleadges which include:
