Fair Trade
What is fair trade?
Fair trade is a form of trade which guarantees a fair price for producers and their employees, while also ensuring environmental protection and guaranteeing rights for producers who are marginalised from the market and for workers.
Where can we buy fair trade products in Italy?
Fair trade products can also be found in the supermarket, although there are shops that only sell fair trade products.
Banana
Bananas are one of the products where the fair trade mark is often seen.
History
The first attempt to market goods on a fair and solidary basis was made in the markets of Northern Europe in the 1940s and 1950s by religious groups and non-governmental organisations of various political orientations. Ten Thousand Villages, under the Mennonite Central Committee and SERRV International, were the first, in 1946 and 1949, respectively, to develop fair trade chains in developing countries. The products, almost exclusively handicrafts ranging from jute objects to cross-stitch embroidery, were mainly sold in churches or at fairs. The products themselves often had no other function than to show that charity had been made.
