They are in Nelson Mandela's office . Mandela is now President of the Republic of South Africa. ( flags , desk , ''Mr President'')

They are discussing about inspiration of both men about life.

4- When is it happening?
Mandela said that when he was in prison ( at Robben Island), he found inspiration in a poem. It helped him to stand when all he wanted to do is to lay down.
Mandela is President , so, it is happening after 1994.

The document is a poem because there are stanzas and rhymes.

The poem is entitled ''Invictus''. This is a latin word and it means ''unconquerable'', ''invicible''.

2- What can you say about him?
He fought against racial discrimination during his whole life and was sent to 27 years in prison in 1964 . He released in 1990 and four years after, he was the first Black President of the Rpublic of South Africa. He died in 2013.

II- History of South Africa
a- The beginnings
The document is a timeline ( = frise chronologique)
2- What does it represent?
It represents the colonialism of South Africa during the 17th and 18th centuries.
3- Who were the settlers ? Which mainland were they from? Why?
The settlers were mostly Europeans ( Dutch & British) . First, they arrived in South Africa for the slave trade but also South Africa was famous for its gold mines.
4- Why were there wars ? What was the purpose?
There were 2 Boers Wars because each country wanted more lands as they could but also gold.
b- What is Apartheid?

We can a black man who is faced to two white policemen who are wearing a uniform. The white people are holding an arm which is a bayonet. The black person is riding a bike and he is smiling to them .
What do you expect to see in the video?
In the video, we expect the video deals with racism ( black people against white people); black deaths ( arms ) in South Africa some decades ago ( back and white picture)

Try to give a definition of what Apartheid Regim was?
Apartheid (Afrikaans: “apartness”) is the name of the policy that governed relations between the white minority and the nonwhite majority of South Africa during the 20th century.
It was used to describe the racial segregation policies embraced by the white minority government.
What made black South African inferior to white people?
Black south africans were banned from white areas. They were considered as second class ''citizens''.
To which aspects of their lives they were considered as ''different''?
There were separated from public facilities , transport and schools. Many of them had no rights of citizenship. Black South Africans were reunited into townships ( under-developped urban areas , where people lived with bad conditions).
