Earthquakes
An earthquake is the shaking of the surface of the Earth resulting from a sudden release of energy in the Earth's lithosphere. Earthquakes can range in intensity, from those that are so weak that they cannot be felt, to those violent enough to propel objects and people into the air and damage critical infrastructure. At the Earth's surface, earthquakes manifest themselves by shaking and displacing or disrupting the ground, they can even cause a tsunami!

Lisbon earthquake in 1755
Earthquake followed by a tsunami and a firestorm in 1 november 1755.
+ info
The 1755 Lisbon earthquake impacted the Iberian Peninsula (mainly Portugal) and Northwest Africa on the morning of Saturday, 1 November. In combination with fires and a tsunami, the earthquake almost completely destroyed Lisbon, seismologists estimate the Lisbon earthquake had a magnitude of 7.7 or greater on the magnitude scale, with its epicenter in the Atlantic Ocean about 200 km southwest of Algarve region, and about 290 km southwest of Lisbon, causing around 12000 deaths and accentuated political tensions in Portugal, profoundly disrupting the Portuguese Empire. Contemporary reports state that the earthquake lasted from three to six minutes, causing fissures 5 metres wide in the city center, approximately 40 minutes after the earthquake, a tsunami engulfed the harbor and downtown area rushing up the river, it was followed by two more waves. Candles lit in homes and churches all around because of All Saints' Day were knocked over, starting a fire that developed into a firestorm which burned for hours in the city, asphyxiating people up to 30 metres from the blaze. I don't think it was preventable because of how undeveloped the technology was and because of the unpredictability of natural disasters, but I do think it could happen again (it wouldn't be as strong as this one).

Tips and tricks:
What to do before, during and after an earthquake
Practice Drop, Cover, and Hold on. Being prepared allows you to avoid unnecessary excursions and to address minor medical issues at home, if you can afford it, make essential purchases and slowly build up supplies.
DropWherever you are, drop down to your hands and knees and hold onto something sturdy. CoverCover your head and neck with your arms. If a sturdy table or desk is nearby, crawl underneath it for shelter. If no shelter is nearby, crawl next to an interior wall (away from windows). Hold OnIf you are under a table or desk, hold on with one hand and be ready to move with it if it moves. If seated and unable to drop to the floor, bend forward, cover your head with your arms and hold on to your neck with both hands. In special cases, check the images below this.
Expect aftershocks to follow the main shock of an earthquake. Be ready to Drop, Cover, and Hold On if you feel an aftershock. If you are in a damaged building, go outside and quickly move away from the building. If you are in an area that may experience tsunamis, go inland or to higher ground immediately after the shaking stops. Check yourself to see if you are hurt and help others if you have training.
