Day 1: May 12th, 2023

1 Ask a Question

Every science experiment begins with a question. It must be a testable question, or a question that can be answered by performing an experiment.

Home

Day 1: May 12th, 2023

1 Ask a Question (Continued)

To perform an experiment, you need a controlled variable. A controlled variable is something that you change on purpose.

Home

Day 2: May 15th, 2023

2 Make Observations

Making observations is a way to learn and notice more about the world around us. You can use your 5 senses to make observations. Sometimes scientists use tools such as a magnifying glass, ruler, scale, microscope, or thermometer to help them make observations.Make your observations before performing your experiment. You can write, draw, or do both to show what you observe!

Day 3: May 17th, 2023

3 Form a Hypothesis

A hypothesis is a statement that predicts what will happen in an experiment using what you already know. A prediction is a guess about what might happen.

Home

Use the "If __________ then __________ because ___________." statement to write your hypothesis.

Example:

Day 4: May 24th, 2023

4 Gather Materials and Procedure

Materials are equipment and supplies for doing or making something. It is important to plan ahead, and make sure that you have all of the materials needed before you begin. If you are missing one of the materials, you may not be able to complete your science experiment.

Home

Look at your question. Make a list of all the materials you will need to complete your experiment. Ask your learning coach to check that you included everything you will need.

Example:

Day 4: May 24th, 2023

4 Gather Materials and Procedure Continued

A procedure is the steps that are followed to complete a task. A procedure is like a plan.In science, the procedure is the plan you follow when doing your experiment. It is important to follow a procedure because then you can prove what you did, and you can follow the steps to try the experiment again. You should write the experimental procedure like a recipe for your science experiment. A good procedure is so detailed and complete that someone else can do your experiment exactly!

Home

Example:

With the help of your learning coach, write or type the step-by-step procedure for your independent experiment.

Day 5: May 30th, 2023

5 Experiment and Record Data

When you do an experiment, you are testing a hypothesis. When scientists study something, they usually collect data. Remember that data are facts and information used to study or plan. Data includes observations and measurements made in a science experiment.Data sheets are used to record or write down data. These are useful tools for keeping track of what you measure and observe. Data sheets also help you study, analyze, and understand your data.Data sheets may include tables, charts, graphs, diagrams, and drawings.

Home

Examples:

With the help of your learning coach, create a data sheet for your independent experiment.

Day 5: May 30th, 2023

5 Experiment and Record Data Continued

Follow the step-by-step procedure to conduct your independent experiment. Record the data from your experiment onto your data sheet.Be sure to take photos or draw pictures of your experiment being conducted. You will want to use these for your presentation to show off your hard work and the cool experiment you chose!

Home

Scientists often conduct the same experiment multiple times to be sure of their conclusions! If possible, try your experiment a couple times!

Day 6: June 1st, 2023

6 Results and Draw Conclusions

After an experiment is over, it is important to look back at your data. You will use the data that you collected to tell the results of the experiment. Remember that the results tell you what happened during an experiment.

Home

Look at back at the data you collected from your independent experiment.

Example:

Day 6: June 1st, 2023

6 Results and Draw Conclusions Continued

After you look at the results of the experiment, you can draw conclusions. Drawing conclusions is an important last step of the scientific method.

Home

Use the following sentences to write or type your conclusion (Remember your learning coach can write or type for you if you need help!)

Example:

"The reason for the experiment was to see _____________. The results show _______________. My hypothesis was (correct/incorrect) because ________________________."

Day 6: June 1st, 2023

6 Results and Draw Conclusions Continued

Now that your experiment is over, you may think that you are done, but there is one more important thing you should do: reflect. When you reflect, it means that you think about something carefully. Reflecting on your experiment allows you to see how you are thinking and working as scientists.

Home

Reflect on your independent science experiment. Tell at least one thing you learned from your experiment. You may also answer one or more of the optional reflection questions if you would like. Be sure to record your presentation and upload it to edio today! I can't wait to see all the awesome things you are working on!

Friday, May 12th

Independent Experiment: Day 1Be sure to have your project chosen. Please remember to complete the form for Ms. Cagle! You will need to decide on the question you want to ask for your experiment.

Independent Experiment: Day 2You will use your five senses to make observations before conducting your experiment. Draw and/or write your observations.

Independent Experiment: Day 3You will form a hypothesis today. This is a prediction based on what you already know.

Live ClassroomContinue to work on your independent science experiment. Be sure to stop by the zoom room if you have questions about your independent project!
