VibrantTRAVEL GUIDE FOR SMART DOGS

Start

Florence

Florence is extremely dog-friendly, especially after a law was passed in 2008 allowing dogs to enter many public places (restaurants/art galleries etc). If Lorenzo the Magnificent took a liking to his furry-friends, you can only imagine that the tradition stuck around. Be aware that here people might always ask ‘maschio o femmina’ (male or female) since many believe that the sex of the dog determines whether or not they will get along.

The leash

  • Unfortunately, all dogs must be on a leash, except in dog areas

The Muzzle

  • It is, unfortunately, mandatory to carry (without wearing it) a muzzle. Contrary to what one might think, the most "comfortable" muzzles are the Baskerville models.

  • Poop should always be collected by your 2 legs mate.

  • Although it is not forbidden, it is highly recommended to avoid peeing at doors and shops entrances. For the rest.....PEE FREELY!

1.Piazzale Michelangelo and Belvedere Fort

Piazzale Michelangelo and Belvedere Fort 50 minutes (not sniffing too much), easy Suggested time: sunset or early morning Ideal for those who want to jog/walk on a slight incline and for pups to sniff in peace. GO! Stop by at The Roses Garden for a refreshing drink and a bit of rest. Once in the Fort, have a cappuccino in front of one of the best views in town. Did I mention, visiting is free? Whether or not you go inside, the path leading here is really quite nice, and you can have your coffee in the San Niccolo area when you come back. This area is very appealing because it feels like another world, one far from tourist crowds – with pretty streets and more green than you find in Florence’s cobble-stoned center. Plus, it is a bit of a workout.

4.San Michele a Torri Farm

San Michele a Torri Organic Farm 45 minutes away by car (by private driver approx € 165) Suggested time: anytime Ideal for wine lovers dogs GO! The uniqueness of the environment, built around an organic farm, and the richness of biodiversity make up this fascinating structure in the heart of the chianti. Here you can enjoy new flavors and a way of life that has almost been forgotten. Try the:

  • Tastings
  • Pic-Nic
  • Visit to the Cellar and the Orciaia
NOT TO MISS: buy the LAUDEMIO olive oil, the best Tuscan olive oil!

2.Limonaia Villa Strozzi: Dog Park & Spritz O’Clock

Limonaia di Villa Strozzi (il Boschetto) 1 hour, easy Suggested time: anytime Ideal for stretching the legs a little without the leash and get to know the natives GO! At Villa Strozzi, the park here is sort of godsend for people and animals alike. There are plenty of trees, the dog park is enclosed, with a working fountain. The Limonaia area (in the summer months – until the end of September) serves cheap pizza and aperitifs. CANNOT MISS THE SPRITZ (Prosecco wine and Aperol), the Italy's favourite cocktail!

5.Ponte Vecchio & Cascine Park

Ponte Vecchio & Cascine Park 1 hour, easy Suggested time: anytime, avoid the week.-ends due to the crowd Ideal for rolling around in the grass and take a bath in the river (from a dog point of view) GO! With its 118 hectares it is the largest park in Florence and the city green lung. The former Medici hunting reserve is a tad shabby in spots, with dog playground and fountains. The Arno river runs along the park and during the hot summer days offers refreshment to all dogs that love water. Top tip: Shop for fresh produce and picnic supplies, clothes and cheap homeware at Il Mercato delle Cascine, the city’s largest street market held in the park Tuesday mornings (8am–2pm). The former Medici hunting reserve is a tad shabby in spots.

3.Piazza d'Azeglio

Piazza d'Azeglio 5 minutes (15 minutes sniffing and marking), easy Suggested time: anytime Ideal for a quick walk, especially if your 2 legs friend is tired GO! This large piazza is actually a small garden park in the heart of central Florence. Situated in one of the city’s more elegant neighborhoods, it is equipped with a dog area (nothing special, but efficient). Plenty of benches where you can rest under the shady trees.

6.Mercato Centrale & Mercato di Sant'Ambrogio

Mercato Centrale & Mercato di Sant'Ambrogio 10 minutes to each market, easy Suggested time: Monday-Saturday, 8am-2pm Ideal for gourmet dogs GO! The Mercato Centrale (San Lorenzo Central Market) is an amazing dog friendly indoor market with vendors selling everything from apples to zabaglione on the bottom floor during the day and whole top floor is alive with little restaurants serving amazing food well into the evening. You can stop for quick street food or sit down for a longer lunch. Dogs are often spolied with some fresh cuts The Sant'Ambrogio Market is the less touristic market, where you will find many locals and the perfect place to taste the popular "Trippa" or "Lampredotto" at the kiosk right outside the market, "I' Trippaio". It is the fourth and final stomach of a cow, generally slow-cooked with tomato, onion, parsley, and celery until it has the texture of tender roast beef (I know, but believe me: the taste is very mild and consistency is tender and juicy). Both are traditionally served on a crunchy bun, often first soaked in the broth and with spicy and green sauce.
