1. Reading and reciting poetry helps children to develop an appreciation of language and literature.

• Read aloud as a class.
• Groups of 3 or 4 take a line each
• Groups say their line in turn.
• Learn the line by heart.
• Recite the whole poem, group by group.
• Listen to the poem.
• Attempt a translation.
• Second attempt with a dictionary.
• Arrive at the meaning.
• Cut up and reassemble the poem.
• Learn the song.
• Choose between a literal translation and one that rhymes but is not 'word for word'.
• Discuss if the audience makes a difference.
