MONTSERRAT CABALLE: OPERA SINGER

She interpreted more than 80 opera characters: from barroque opera to Giuseppe Verdi, Richard Wagmer,Giacomo Puccini and Richard Strauss. She represented roles as diferent as Norma, Salomé, Violeta, The marschallin, Semirade or Isolde. She was awarded with many prizes and distinctions. She has a foundation with her name for studiying liric. Monserrat Caballé sang with Freddie Mercury the hymn of the 1992 Olimpic games: " Barcelona"

DIEGO VELAZQUEZ: PAINTER

Velázquez is universally acknowledged for his naturalistic style ,for the expression of his living model and still life. He was the creator of masterpieces of visual impression unique in his time. He worked in Seville in the first part of his life. After that ,he moved to Madrid to be the court painter of Philip IV. He made many portraits of the royal family.He traveled to Italy and met many important painters.

The creator of Don Quijote (1605,1615) and most important and celebrated figure in Spanish literature. His novel Don Quijote has translated, in full or in part, into more than 60 languages. 1570 he had enlisted as a soldier in a spanish infantry regiment stationed in Naples, then a possession of the Spanish crown. In mid-September 1571 Cervantes sailed on board the Marquesa, part of the large fleet under the commad of Don Juan de Austria that engaged the enemy on October 7 in the Gulf of Lepanto near Corinth. In the fierce battle he received two gunshot wounds in the chest, and a third in his left hand useless for the rest of his life. Back in Spain he did many different jobs not only as writer. Work: El ingenioso hidalgo don Quijote de la Mancha and Novelas ejemplares.

He was the youngest of his six brothers and sisters. Sickly and shy. He was vegeterian. His great passions were: architecture, nature, religion and love for Cataluña.He had a great intuition and creativity, he made his works in models with many details. He knew sculpture, carpentry, forging, stained glass, ceramics. This allowed him to design all the elements of his buildings. He went through different stages in his art and they are shown below...his best friend was Eusebi Güell who commissioned many works from him.
