Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky(1840-1893)

Russian composer, teacher, conductor and music critic. Tchaikovsky’s legacy is represented by different genres: these are ten operas, three ballets, seven symphonies, 104 romances, a number of program symphonic works, concerts and chamber-instrumental ensembles, choral compositions, cantatas, piano miniatures and piano cycles.

Family

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky was born on May 7,1840 in Votkinsk, a small town in Vyatka province (modern Udmurtia) in the Russian Empire, in a family with a long history of military service.

Education

In 1850, his parents decided to send Tchaikovsky to the Imperial School of Jurisprudence in St. Petersburg.

Pyotr’parents graduated from institutes in St. Petersburg and the School of Jurisprudence, which mainly served the minor nobility, and thought that this education would prepare their son for a career as a civil servant.Ater graduating from this school in 1859 Tchaikovsky began working in the Ministry of Justice.He liked visiting the opera house in his spare time.He was strongly impressed by operas of Mozart and Glinka.

Musical Creativity

In 1861 he entered the Music classes of the Russian Musical Society. He gave up the service and took up music entirely. In 1865 he graduated from the Conservatory course with a silver medal. Tchaikovsky devoted all the rest of his life to music.

The premiere of his first performance «Voivode» based on the play by Alexander Ostrovsky took place in 1869.

lyrical chamber opera in 3 acts, 7 paintings by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, to a libretto by Konstantin Shilovsky, based on the novel of the same name in verse by A. S. Pushkin. The premiere took place on March 17 (29), 1879 at the Maly Theater in Moscow.

The last years

The composer spent the last years of his life in the vicinity of the town of Klin near Moscow. He arranged for the opening of the school and donated money for its maintenance. Nowadays his house is a museum.
