Elizabeth and her sister Margaret were educated at home by tutors. When her father became king, Elizabeth received extra lessons in law and religion to prepare her for her future role as Queen. When World War II broke out in 1939, Elizabeth and Margaret, like many other children, were evacuated from London. When Elizabeth was 18, in 1944, she joined the women’s branch of the Army, and trained to become a mechanic. In 1947, Princess Elizabeth married Philip Mountbatten, a distant cousin. He was a Naval officer. They had four children, Charles, Anne, Andrew and Edward. In 1952, the King became ill. Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip replaced him on a royal visit to Kenya, at that time a British colony in Africa. On 6 February, they received news that the King had died. Elizabeth immediately became Queen. Her coronation ceremony took place on 2 June 1953.
King George VI, Princess Elizabeth, Queen Elizabeth, Princess Margaret in December 1936.
Princess Elizabeth Alexandra Mary was born on 21 April 1926. Her father was the second son of King George V. He wasn’t destined to become king, and so Elizabeth wasn’t destined to become queen. But in 1936, George’s older brother, King Edward VIII, abdicated because he wanted to marry Wallis Simpson, who was divorced. Since at the time it was illegal for the monarch to marry a divorced person, his brother became King George VI.
Queen Elizabeth II is celebrating her Platinum Jubilee: seventy years as the British monarch. That’s a record! It’s the longest reign of a British monarch. In the U.K., the weekend of 2-5 June 2022 is a big Jubilee celebration.
