History of Alaska

1741

Russian made the first "discovery" of Alaska

1776

The U.S. became independent

Gold was discovered in Alaska, so many people arrived there to search for it

1784

First Russian settlement in Alaska was established on Kodiak Island

1867

U.S. purchased Alaska for $7.2 million

1900

The Capital of Alaska was moved from Sitka to Juneau

Oil is discovered and plans begin to build a pipeline to the North Slope to recover it

1942

Japan invaded the Islands Attu and Kiska, but the US got them back a year later

1959

Alaska became the 49th State
