There are those who say that the "Pauliteiros de Miranda" dance is a war dance, which descends from Greco-Roman times and that men have adapted and transformed it in their own way. According to this point of view, the sticks are nothing more than the substitution of the shield and the sword. That is why the stick in the left hand defends and the one in the right hand attacks.

Vira Arranged in a wheel, the couples stand with their arms raised and rotate slowly counterclockwise. The men move forward and the women move back.

Marchas populares The Popular Marches (Marchas Populares) are a Portuguese tradition that dates back to 1932, when the first event took place in the capital city of Lisbon. Although the Marchas are held at many towns and villages of Portugal, the most famous competition is the Marchas Populares de Lisboa, taking place each year during the official city holiday of St. Anthony, the Patron Saint of Lisbon, from the night of 12th June through 13th June. The popular marches consist of a thematic competition between teams that dress up with handmade outfits to march and dance through an open avenue or closed arena to the sound of popular music, mixing motifs of Portuguese summer culture, like "manjerico" and the sea. The participants of the several teams are usually residents of a certain neighbourhood, students, or members of a local organization. (In Wikipedia)

Vira da Nazaré In the old days, as soon as they came ashore from the sea, fishermen would celebrate their arrival with dances and songs. "Don't go to sea, you fool" - This is one of the most popular verses of the vira da Nazaré.

Bailes de Roda (Circle Dances) Dancing and singing in Baixo Alentejo used to be the only form of entertainment for the people, after rural work and as a celebration of festive days. In the Circle Dances the men invite the ladies to dance. The typical costumes represent the clothes used in the various tasks that men and women performed in the countryside.
