ERASMUS PROJECT APRIL 2022

MENU

Our job this term has been to create different workshops to learn the medieval history of Cáceres through the three cultures. The final project will be to recreate the market in our center, so that all the students can show what they have learned to all the students of our school.

One of the most enriching aspects of the history of Cáceres is that, over the centuries, three great cultures have passed through it: the Arab, the Christian and the Jewish.

MEDIEVAL STALLS ACTIVITIES

Our students have learnt different aspects of medieval age life and we are going to do a performance where in every stall children show to all the students what they have learnt.

The 5th grade students have drawn up a current calendar showing 12 of the coats of arms of the nobles of the time illustrated by hand. They have worked on different fantastic animals from the Middle Ages collected in BESTIARIOS that will be exhibited and explained to those who visit us at the workshop. To make them, 29 different fantastic beings have been investigated that have been copied and illustrated by hand as copyists of that time.

The workshop that the 5th grade students will develop will consist of teaching medieval writing introducing children to the world of manuscripts of the monasteries dedicated to copying books by hand with the instruments used and with the calligraphy used in the Middle Ages; writing with pen and ink, parchment and wax.

The 6th B and C students are making a giant medieval book (large cardboard). The pages have been aged brown, the edges trimmed, and painted brown. It talks about the Middle Ages, the feudal pyramid, the knights, the ladies, the romances, the weapons, the armors. At the market, the sixth-year students will show the book they have produced and tell about its content so that it can be used as a learning tool for the rest of the classes. They will also recite some medieval ballads and make parchments that they will give to the other groups. We would also like to carry out a workshop of bracelets or necklaces.

The workshop organized by students 1st grade is based on showing a file of aromatic and medicinal plants already used in middle ages. 23 plants have been worked on and the children, with the help of their families, have investigated their characteristics and properties. Then they showed them to their classmates. In the workshop of the medieval market, the cards will be exhibited accompanied by the plants or herbs with which perfumes or infusions were prepared. The activity of the "sensory workshop" will consist of selecting a series of plants so that they can smell and touch them, trying to discover which plant it is by smell, taste or sight. To set the scene for the medieval market, the students will be dressed in costumes of merchants of the time.

The 2nd year Primary Education students have been investigating what society was like in medieval times. They have focused on the peasants, on their lives: how and where they lived, what their homes and farms were like. What was on the farms, their animals and what they used. We have also learned what they grew and how they prepared their food.

We are listening to “a cappella” and instrumental music of the time, instrumental, and dance music. Listening to and identifying images of medieval musical instruments.Learning steps and choreographies of dances of the time. We have started with an “Allemande”, specifically. “Allemande et tripla” for the clarity and simplicity of its steps. It is a very old medieval dance that over time has become a fundamental piece of the collection of suites in later centuries.

In the music classroom we are working on various aspects of music in the Middle Ages, focusing mainly on these three: What was the music like at that time? Religious: Gregorian Chant Secular: Troubadours, Minstrels. What were the instruments that existed at that time? Chordophones Aerophones Idiophones How were the dances that were danced at that time. Parade, entertainment, morris dances or Moorish dances... Carol, stampie, branle, skip it, tarantella...

The 5ºC students are going to carry out a falconry workshop with which they will try to bring this art of hunting closer to the students of our center. To do this, we have contacted a falconer. He has instructed us on its fundamental aspects: history, evolution, modalities, birds, falconer equipment, bird care... Distributed the points to be discussed, each student will perform a part of it. We will do it on aged paper, imitating medieval calligraphy. The birds will be represented in polystyrene, with their corresponding technical sheet. We will also have the falconer's tools with their corresponding explanation. All the works will be presented in a stand, adorned with medieval pennants, falconry motifs, and three large panels on which all the students' works will be exposed.
